Yeah, it's expected that you gotta pay for retention and reduced cap....

DeMelo : Better defenseman, 1/4 of Scandella's original price: Third round pick.

Dillon : Better defenseman, also retained. Cheaper contract : 2nd and 3rd.

It's pretty likely that STL meets the conditions and gives up the 4th. At that rate it would have been better to give the value equivalent to a pair of 2nds for Dillon.

Difficult to not judge what has been the day's most "out there" trade.

You didn't only pay for retention. You also paid for MTL taking on risk for you. At the time of MTL's acquisition, Scandella was getting scratched, so who knew if he was gonna pan out?

I think the DeMelo trade is the outlier - not sure why Dorion didn't get more.

And you think that conditional 4th is likely met? Blues probably won't re-sign Scandella next year, and reaching the WCF is a tall task, nothing near "likely" IMO.

Ummm, no. I could certainly debate your opinion comments on Scandella vs. other players/trades, but you obviously have not noticed what I'm trying to get you to notice. Look again.

Anything short of the WCF for this team is a failed year. Tarasenko should be back by then too. It's not a horrible deal that was made, but WSH didn't have to pay this much for retention. Two trades for different categories of defensemen getting the same return looks off .

Hopefully his play proves us wrong.

I'm saying Dillon got the exact same percentage of retention and already was on a cheaper contract. Washington didn't pay a premium for that retention. Dillon alone is worth a 2nd and 3rd. Scandella as a player is not. STL payed a premium.

The trade is not awful - it fills a need in the lineup. But it was not done at market value like the Dillon trade was.

Take off the rose colored glasses. Either that or give an explanation as to why this trade is so great. As per usual, we are expected to read your mind.

It's laughable that you shun all AGM trades that are ever made on this website, then when a trade even more laughable is made, you are suddenly backing it. What's the deal?

Obviously the goal is to win the whole thing lol but rn the Blues odds of reaching WCF are 4.5 to 1. Either I'm getting a great bargain bet, or it's unlikely that they do it. Hockey is too random to predict those types of things, I'm just saying it's more likely that they lose in rd 1 or 2 than reach WCF based on my experience of watching this team every game for the last couple of decades.

I don't speak for @mokumboi, but this isn't the type of trade to lose sleep over. Armstrong probably paid more than he should have, most likely because he already had the "cash" out of his pocket while he was bidding for Dillon and rather than put it back he spent it. Not the savviest move, but the balance of Army's moves over time is a net positive so it's hard to really complain (especially considering the immunity he has from his recent championship).

Oh FFS. Where did you see me say this trade was great? And why can you not just go look at the team info above and figure out what I'm hinting at. I'm not handing it to you. And I'm not debating this trade, no matter how comically overwrought you are about it.

And by the way, a proper AGM takes a **** ton of time to do right, and I do not have that kind of time. So sue me.

Are you talking 2nd for 2M and 4th for 4M?

I don't think real value grows exponentially per million of cap. If you're not on about the player value and something else, I am lost outside of this.

Factoring in the retention, I'd agree they overpaid by one round. But it's done and it gives us a better chance to repeat, so I'm not going to lose sleep over it. And it's miles away from "getting played". And it's still not what I'm getting at with this AGM.

Maybe someday someone will figure it out. I honestly can't believe it's taken this long.

You'll like Scandella. Hardly ever makes a mistake. Always in the right spot. Won't put up many points. Good fit in StL.

Wow, nobody? UGH, okay. The salary retention is enough that Tarasenko can return during the regular season and everybody fits under the cap, which Army alluded during his Scandella presser. Vladdy is looking ahead of schedule and with continued fortune could be back some time in March, perhaps even early in the month.

How did no one catch that?

I have no problem with that, but Army gave him too much term. If Mikkola proves he can do essentially the same job (which I think he can), Scandella will surely be moved before the deal ends.

Wasn’t a big fan of Scandella in MTL but he’s a good #6, I won’t say #5. Didn’t play is best hockey in Montreal, hopefully he bounces back in St-Louis

So far, he's been just what the doctor ordered. No complaints at all. And he's allowed Parayko to open up his offensive game. Technically, he's in our top 4, but that whole way of looking at D units doesn't really fit us because we give a lot of responsibility to all six guys. We're more about finding tandems that fit together well, both in defense and with the forward lines (ROR-Perron, Schwartz-Schenn, Sunny-Barby, etc).
