Forward from OTT and CHI D to survive without Klefbom

Created by: Dwight_Schrute
Team: 2019-20 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2020
Published: Feb. 18, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Klefbom being out leaves a huge hole in an already injury riddled Oiler's roster. As much as I love Caleb Jones I am not comfortable with him in that top 4 just yet. Enter Erik Gustaffson, who I have heard has had defensive struggles however statistically he is far from a bad player, chips in offensively and has good CORSI numbers and is only -8 on a pretty weak Blackhawk blueline.

To be clear I am not sure I am giving up enough for him, I suppose if the draft pick has to move up around or two its still something I would do. In Laggesson the Hawks get an interesting young D that will help with their rebuild, plays solid in his own end and is quite physical. Should be a capable top 6 D by next season, just not yet.

We are also hurting at forward with Kassian suspended, McDavid, Neal and Nygard out. That's why I have targeted Namestnikov who should be a low cost rental, and can centre the "2nd line" until McDavid gets back at which point I think he will be worth a look on Connor's wing. With these trades we should stay afloat in the playoff race and then be all the more dangerous once the injured players return. With all healthy:

Namestnikov-McDavid-Neal
RNH-Draisaitl-Yamamoto
Archibald-Sheahan-Kassian
Gagner-Haas-Chiasson

Klefbom-Larsson
Nurse-Bear
Gustaffson-Benning
Jones-Russell

Any of the bottom 4 D would be interchangeable.

seems as likely as trading for Petry
it would be admitting your own failures as an organization as Gustafsson was yours and you saw no value in him

That was a "failure" from two GMs ago. The Holland front office shouldn't have any issue at all adding a player that can help us based on swallowing pride and admitting that two GMs/scouting department ago screwed up. So I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

Gustaffson will/should also be drastically cheaper than Petry?

Nobody should want him, even for cap purposes. I doubt he'll get another contract in North America ever again.

Why not? He is expiring at the end of this year and the Sens have like $30mil in cap space. You don't even have to take him on your AHL team, just take his contract back and loan him to finish out the year in Bakersfield if you want.

You're getting a pick that moves up two rounds from the one you gave up to get Namestnikov and a young and cheap hard nosed bottom 6 player that is useful to have around for a rebuilding team. I honestly thought that might be a bit of an overpay for him.

Petry, Schultz, Marino, Osterle, Gustafsson and I am sure there is more. People are crazy not to trade for Oilers D. they are all top 4 D

Hate to break it to you, but Gustafsson isn't a top-4 option either. He plays 3rd pairing in Chicago.

It's a week until the deadline; Klefbom is projected to miss 2-3 weeks. I think Holland will hold the line on defense.

Khaira is a big part of the reason Edmonton has the 2nd best PK in the league. I'd be hesitant to trade him - especially for a rental.

If he plays in Bakersfield fine, but I wouldn't want that person near my team.

Deep down I know that. But the knee jerk reaction to seeing Vegas and Vancouver loading up while we’re dropping like flies in a battle with them for positioning is to find a way to stop the bleeding.

Vancouver lost Boeser for the season, Toffoli doesn't make up for that. Vegas goes as Fleury goes, and he's been hot and cold this season. As long as McDavid and Klefbom are back in ~2 weeks, I'm not worried.
