Created by: Billy739
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 18, 2020
Published: Feb. 18, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
MTL draws 7th OA in the draft

MTL trades COL later 1st thats 28th OA ,their top 2nd round pick and a 3rd to a team with the 11th-14th OA pick (will throw in a Ikonen,Juulsen or Olofsson if needed )

MTL trades its 11th OA , 7th OA , 2nd in 2020 and their choice of Danault , Domi ,Suzuki or Drouin for the #1 OA pick

MTL gives up a lot but practically without destroying the teams offense completely but instead by moving out mostly UFA's with 1 RFA of value to get the next Lecavlier level french talent taken 1st OA
Trades
1.
MTL
  1. Barberio, Mark
  2. Greer, AJ
  3. Timmins, Conor
  4. 2020 1st round pick (COL)
  5. 2020 4th round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
Greer or Bowers unless you're willing to move Zadorov then he'll do and we'll take lesser picks to make that swap .

taking Barberio so that only 890k additionally is taken on by COL to pull the deal off .
COL
  1. Kovalchuk, Ilya
  2. Tatar, Tomas ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
4m cap combined
2.
MTL
  1. Ho-Sang, Joshua
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (NYI)
Additional Details:
1.125m cap exchanged so i didnt feel retaining to make it work was needed but if it is throw out a reasonable contract you want gone
3.
MTL
  1. Backes, David
Additional Details:
Backes goes to a team that will Start him as a Regular with no cap worries worth burying him over even if he's playing good .

Alzner gets a new AHL system to prove himself in and will likely just be bought out next year or the year after .(Alzners cost to bury him is just over 1.5m now with retention making it more cost effective to just bury him and forget )

Neither team gets a payout but MTL includes Weal because they retained and BOS takes him because he's a 13th forward for depth they dont have to pay for
BOS
  1. Alzner, Karl ($2,000,000 retained)
  2. Weal, Jordan
Additional Details:
Alzner @2.6m cap
easier to buy out then Backes and cheaper when buried.

same amount hit against the cap more or less just over 2 years instead of 1 year .

Just regarding the Backes deal, i literally would rather have Alzner and Weal then Backes + Alzner 43% retention. Backes wouldn't possibly give the Habs anything more than what Weal would at a fraction of the cost. I like the idea of being creative with Alzner but I don't see a benefit here for the Habs.

Edit: Actually upon second thought it may not be so bad but it would have to be because the Habs are major sellers this year. So that extra cap space next year is really not needed. Deferring future cap space to next year might be worth it actually.

yeah i saw the same opportunity
habs benefit is if we can play Scandella 20 games and get a 2nd in recooped value he gained .
why not Backes at a retained salary at the TDL before he turns UFA ?
he'll certainly get more then Alzner who's taking up space in Laval and we need it with no ECHL team to send players .

i think Thompson , Weal and Cousins have all played well infront of teams scouts the past 2 weeks and they'll be gone .
Kovalchuk i'm not sure on ,he could end up staying the way MTL seems to be approaching things

Kulak might even go for the right price if that's what Scandella got a 3rd for Kulak isnt unreasonable and would help .

but the real angle is all the picks to play with at Draft Day in MTL whether we trade up or just pick bulk in hopes of speeding up a rebuild we're set.
