That would be the definition of going for it, except Holland will not trade arguably their best prospect, a 2020 1st and Pooli for Kap and 25 games of Barrie

Why would Edmonton trade give up Bouchard, who projects to be Barrie with actual defensive ability for Barrie, who is gone at seasons end and sucks at actually being defensive?

And a first round pick? Common man this is ridiculous

I believe the argument here is Kap is a 1st plus 1/2 of Pooli, and Barrie is Bouchard and the other half of Pooli and Pooli is added to take on Russel for the remainder of the season and free up 4 million for Edmonton next season.

Toronto doesn't want to have Russell either, he's going to clog up their salary cap. If the Leafs make moves to take on salary (which I don't think they should) it absolutely has to be for this season only. No sense in hampering your ability to compete longterm.

I do not think giving away Kapanen is going to make you better for next year. Puljavari's value is questionnable, you aren't getting Bouchard in this deal and a mid-round first is not going to help for 3-4 years and you took on salary. You have 4 years of the big 4 core being together after this year, don't waste it.

Why would anyone trade a 1st + for Kapanen??????

Why would anyone trade a top prospect for 25 games of Barrie?????

Barrie is worth a 1st and a prospect, that's Puljujarvi. Kapanen is worth a good prospect, if we take on Russell. They trade for Barrie because Bouchard isn't ready yet...that should be obvious, he's a rental.

IF the Leafs were actually committed to selling, which I doubt, I still think you'd have to tweak this deal. And it would be more like a hockey deal. In my tweaks, I don't think the Leafs have to identify as sellers, since I think it helps both teams in different ways. Anyway, here is my tweak.

To Edmonton: Kapanen, Dermott, Barrie, Bracco
To Toronto: Nurse, Bouchard, Benson, and 2020 1st round draft pick - they could also take Sam Gagner's rental contract off their hands.

I never said it was fair, just pointed out the thought process, why would anyone take on Russel a cap dump for free? As for Barrie he would get a 1st rnd pick any team with a sound defensive game that has a little trouble producing offense will pay that price for Barrie, Dallas would love him, Oilers as well but we all know Holland will not pay those prices. As for Kapenen at the deadline no he doesn't get a first rounder, but at draft day for a team (Calgary) that feels they are a right shot RW away from contending would absolutely pass the 1st over for a 22 year old RW with upside, speed and all the tools needed to be a top 6 F than draft a 50/50 shot for 3/4 years later

K, try to trade Barrie for that...TML may still have him on Monday night tho. I can't see why Barrie would command that as he has had a horrible year this year as a D man...and playing in Toronto has magnified that with its media presence

Have you seen the ridiculous prices? Kapanen easily gets a 1st rounder. He's a coveted by GMs so there would be some competition to acquire him.

Keep laughing tire fire, at this point KK has greater value than AA and his minus 45 and his 10 goals - kid can actually play a little defense and not just sweep in the edge of the D zone looking for a bounce

KK is also on one of the top offensive teams in the league, While AA is on the worst scoring team in the league. Are we really going to go there. It's essentially Russel+Puljujarvi+Bouchard+Edmonton's 2020 1st round pick for Kapanen this guy is delusional Barrie is just a toss in seeing that he wants $8 million per he'd just be a rental. Kapanen is decent but no way in hell worth that package. Bet you money that AA in the Leafs top 6 puts up more points then Kapanen ever will.

Russel is a cap dump so let's take that into consideration and you pay to move cap dumps. It's essentially a 1st for Kapenen, a Prospect in Bouchard for Barrie and pool party for the Russel cap dump

That's totally ridiculous. And who's to say that Bouchard isn't NHL ready yet? I've seen reports that he is ready - if not now, then certainly very soon. He certainly wouldn't be any worse than Barrie, who can't even handle sheltered 3rd pairing comp. And Edmonton already has one of the best 3rd pairing RHD's in the league, plus a stable top-4, which is why Bouchard hasn't been recalled and why you won't see idiotic trades like this from Ken Holland.

Except Kapenen is not in the leafs top 6, hasn't been in the leafs top 6, and we'll never know cause there is no reason for the Leafs to aquire a 1 dimensional 1 way RFA F

Even if you consider Russell a cap dump, why does Edmonton do this? They can absorb Kapanen's cap hit by using LTIR and Barrie isn't needed because they're pretty set at RD. Besides, Russell can't be traded because he's on IR - and he probably doesn't have Toronto on his trade list anyhow.

Agreed that in no way does Holland do this trade, but given the rental Dman market Barrie will bring in a 1st any team with a sound defensive structure would love to have his offensive game on the back end for a playoff run (Dallas would be my pick to make that deal)

Seeing as he can't handle 3rd pairing sheltered comp, I highly doubt that's an attractive rental target for a playoff team. You need defense to win in the playoffs and Barrie doesn't bring any.

Barrie has been averaging 22 mins a night, with Rielly out he has been used in all situations including situations he is clear not meant to, to say he's had 3rd pair sheltered minutes is simply ridiculous, there is no denying he has struggled this season on the D side of things but Tyson Barrie has been exactly what Tyson Barrie was advertised as and that's an offensive defenceman that quarterbacks the PP, this Defense wins championships is literally 50/50. Pittsburgh lost in 08 in the final to defensive driven Red Wings with a high octane offense then won the exact same scenerio the following year, same when they beat the defence first sharks to win again, St.Louis did last season with Defense if you actually look at the teams that go deep or win it all 50% were league leaders in defense and 50% were average or below in defense. Both systems can and have won championships

Barrie plays 3rd pairing comp: http://puckiq.com/woodmoney?season=20192020&tier=Elite&positions=d&team=tor&group_by=player_season_team

He gets the highest OZ starts of any Leafs D-man and he's sheltered from opposition elites by design. Those are verifiable facts.

All the teams that have won in recent memory have had good defense corps, most have had a #1D on the roster. All winners played team defense and had a really good 5-man system. You still need good defenders to win in the playoffs.
