Florida gets a physical tweener player, Toronto gets an established NHL depth forward. It's pretty much just deck chair shuffling, but I'd give a slight edge for the Leafs on this one.

What's Marchment's potential? I don't know much about him.

Why? Maybe the message didn’t sink in: WE NEED A DEFENDER NOT A FORWARD. Nuff said. Thanks...

Florida: We’re in the middle of a playoff race with the rest of the Atlantic division, but we’re willing to trade a Forward because we really need help on defence

Also Florida: how about we clearly downgrade our forward group while getting no help on D and help out one of our main rivals for a playoff spot

Not sure I follow Tallon’s logic on this one, unless this is just the first domino for future trades

Marchment hasn't looked like an NHL player, and we move him for an NHL player.
Seems like a good deal to me!

Probably 4th line. Chippy, big guy but will never score a lot. Not sure about his defensive upside.

Was this really needed? Or is this a knee jerk due to last nights loss?

yeah FL gave up a 5'9 winger who might score 12 goals a season......no great loss here. Not sure what's bunched people's panties up.
It's not like this was some prize or a piece you really want in the playoffs.

Bad trade by Florida but Mason Marchment has some untapped potential that maybe Joel Q can bring out.

Horrible deal for Florida, Malgin is a really strong young forward. He has a wicked shot too!

I'm happy to see some kind of shakeup, especially on the 4th line where it seemed like we were a bit lost.
Don't quite get this trade from FLA's perspective. Perhaps they see something more in Mason?

Not sure I understand this trade on Florida's part. Giving up an established NHL player for an AHL player, TO A DIVISION RIVAL... My vote goes to Toronto. I bet that Dubas is going to trade Kapanen for a decent defender and Malgin will take Kapanen's place in the lineup.

Well ur welcome Toronto, Malgin fits ur playstyle and pretty good.. Speedy, very shifty and good hands.. Dunno what's Tallon's vision here. AHL defender would have made some sense.

Marchment is an undrafted player originally signed to an AHL contract who has worked his way up from the ECHL to the NHL over the course of the past 4+ seasons. He’s a testament to Toronto’s developmental system as they’ve taken “nothing” and turned it into a young but established NHL depth forward in Malgin.

Today Marchment is more than “nothing” however. He’s tenacious and an agitator and has shown a physical aspect of his game from the get go. He works hard on the forecheck and is defensively solid - tho sometimes he will go for the “big hit” when it’s not always warranted and he’ll always take more penalties than he draws. He’s been a fan favourite for the Marlies for the past 3 seasons and I for one am going to miss the guy.

As he has taken on more special teams (PP and PK) responsibilities in Years 2 & 3 and moved into a Top-6 (AHL) role, his offensive game has taken a big step forward. From where I’m sitting, my main concerns lay in his skill and play-making (he’s working on a Cy Young year this season) and his injury history and age (he turns 25 next month). He’s experienced several injuries over the past two season (multiple back injuries I believe) and these are going to limit his ceiling, even if he is still continuing to grow as a player. Maybe he becomes an NHL 4th liner - an energy guy with some finishing ability - but again, age and injuries could make that an upward struggle over the next couple years.

On the whole, even as a big fan of Mason Marchment, I have to give the win to Toronto.

Great, another 5'-9" forward …… Dubas still doesn't get it.

Think Leafs clearly won this, but

Malgin is 5'9 and not exactly the fastest winger. He is also among the worst forwards when it comes to SVG% against when on the ice.

Marchment is 6'4" and should be a good 4th line gritty guy in the playoffs. Might not be an NHL forward, but he has the right frame for a bottom 6 role.
