I know he's one of top AHL scorers as a rookie, but what's the point of calling him up at this point of the season? It might eat up a year of his contract.

Having him in the minors is already eating up a year of his contract. He is of AHL age (20 and above). It's more a reward after his play in the minors. Good test for him, too, to see if he can translate any success to the NHL.

Playing in the AHL so his contract runs a year anyways. I think they gave him a call up for a bit to reward a fantastic year in the minors. Have to show hardwork and results in the minors payoff.
