The whole situation is strange. Varlomov was brought in because he knows Sorokin and was the piece that assured he came over to the Islanders. But in the off-season the false report came that Sorokin requested a trade which is responded to by saying he only learned of the request when he was asked about it by a reporter.

Now he is reported by Dreger to having been traded to Chicago, and apparently confirmed through his teammates. Only to have Chicago say they have not traded for him.

I am an Isles fan but it seems like to me his Agent is putting out these reports in an effort to get him traded to another team. This is pure speculation on my part, but I think he wants to play somewhere else and is trying to force the matter through these reports.

He wants to play in the NHL immediately...and I 100% get it. CHI would indeed be a great place to go. They SHOULD give him every bonus available. CHI could use the extra cap to get another defenseman to stay in front of him. It's a really good scenario for him.

He would play immediately for the Isles too, just in a 50/50 split with Varlamov.

Griess is UFA at end of year.

Do you think that's enough for him? I tend to think he wants to be the 1A and go for the big contract ASAP. Maybe they are friends, but..... "That's business baby" - Panarin

***EDIT*** Also, all the reports (if they can be believed) are rumored to have hang ups around bonuses. He's not reaching max bonuses if he's splitting time.

At this point the only people who really know are Sorokin, his agent, and Lou.

Even if it did happen, Chicago would have to take back a LOT of cap. Between Lehner and Saad, the Isles can't take on an additional 11m.

i get why they would trade him
like Kaprisov and Romanov he's thinking about staying in KHL another year perserving their championship core.
2/3 involved are faced with either staying on a chapionship team to develop or go to a NHL rebuilding team with little direction .
Sorokin is the only one who would join a playoff team making his sacrifice all the more important and likely get him a contract 3x what NYI could offer as a rookie on an ELC.

NYI know Lehner and he played well in their system so it adds up
i just dont think NYI would do it before the Draft after the KHL playoffs are done and they know if Sorokins staying or not .(he'd be a fool not to as he'd be a top KHL goalie learning his craft and starting primarily .

i still think NYI would be foolish to trade him even if he does stay
but they are in a win now mode and i know we gave up Mcdounugh bundle for Gomez in that mode Molsons 1st year as owner .
BOS also did something similar to Dryden after he committed to Cornell Univesity i believe it was (BOS won a cup with pieces from the trade before Dryden turned Probut MTL won 7 with Dryden )

I'm Pretty sure NYI has $18M in deadline cap space. Hawks could take back cap sure, but I'm not sure its needed.
