Description
Jack Johnson is an excellent top 4 defenseman who probably deserves more than 3.25 million a year. However, he is not a good fit for this team’s playing style & he’s getting exposed as a result. He gives up an average of 7.5 scoring chances per game (28 every 60 minutes). High danger chances against are 3.05 per game & 12 every 60 minutes. These are just brutal numbers for a stay at home defenseman & its a big reason why the team is constantly outplayed. All the players on this team have seen their goals against, shots against & chances against averages significantly increase when they share ice time with JJ. It’s clear JJ is negatively impacting the play of his teammates & not the other way around.

I mean if letang could stop turning the puck over on breakouts, that would probably help his numbers

yes blame the dman that plays 26 mins a night when Johnson cant handle the simplest task at keeping the puck in the offensive zone get a grip

letang is bound to make mistakes Johnson is the one who should be able to bail him out of those mistakes its not Letang cause if it was Dumo would be struggling when he plays but he doesnt not Dumo is much needed

I’m glad that you pointed that out. Obviously JJ has performed poorly for the Pens, however I do believe he was a solid top 4 defenseman in his prime with the Blue Jackets & Kings. That’s why he made the US National Team on multiple occasions. He’s just not a good fit on the Pens’ speed system. Perhaps he’d be a better fit with the Blues or Bruins.

The issue is that Johnson is always slow to react to the play, can’t handle passes & move the puck. He constantly puts Letang in a vulnerable position to make mistakes. You don’t see Dumoulin possessing as awful stats despite also playing with Letang.

But the numbers you cite to show he’s bad were also bad for most of his career with the Kings and Columbus. He came into the league as an offense D man with a reputation for being not that great defensively. His offense dried up and people suddenly started thinking he’s a defensive D man.

His performance in Pittsburgh is not different from what happened in Columbus where he played his way out of the lineup and was scratched. It’s not about system or fit. He’s been bad and is still bad.

no you aren't allowed to point that out. You can only point out how he was the only one back on a 3 on 1 and somehow blame that on him, especially if Jarry didn't bail them out.
But lets not kid ourselves here. He's not a top 4 defenseman. But his play is pretty solid for a bottom pairing guy.

Letang is a turnover machine. Please stop defending it.

please stop trying to blame JJ for Letangs stupidity on the ice. He made the same dumb plays with Dumo on the ice all the time. See last years playoff exit for example after example.

there is nothing JJ can do to help when Letang passes it right to the defender sitting in front of the net. WTF do you expect him to do. Magically reappear in front of the net and block the shot?
He makes bone head plays. It's not about his ice time. It's not about JJ not helping. It's about him not paying attention and looking past guys right in front of him.

I know about all that but Letang has NO trust in his partner so he holds onto it much more then needed in the D zone when dumo is back it all changes yes he will still have bone headed moves but he will have a dpartner that he can trust to hold the f***ing puck. Letang rarely passes behind the net to Johnson

This is the poorest excuse I have ever heard for a guy gifting the over team free high danger shots.

I think JJ was drafted to be a Jamie Drysdale type of player. Someone who could be both a puck mover & shutdown guy. He was the type of guy who could change the fate of a team’s blueline. Obviously he hasn’t lived up to that potential, but he was still decent for many years. I feel that because the league has gotten faster with more emphasis on skill & checking, he is becoming less capable of handling other teams’ top players. The intensity is just too much.

Agree Dumoulin & Marino are the best shutdown defenseman on this team.
