Retool for next year

Created by: jmac490
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 22, 2020
Published: Feb. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Carolina trade is to give the Hurricanes a defender who can temporarily provide help while Hamilton and Pesce are out injured.
Leafs get back their 1st which can be used to get a decent prospect, as well as upgrading a D prospect in the system.

Edmonton trade is a hockey trade to get back a young defenseman who can grow in the Leafs system alongside Sandin and Liljegren. Kapanen provides speed for the Oilers offense and can be a decent piece on the McDavid or Draisaitl lines. Chiasson allows for some depth scoring and brings in a bit of grit.

The Colorado trade is to get a 1B goalie in return, as well as, a solid prospect and a pick.

As always, if you dislike what I post, let me know, but please offer your perspective as to why you dislike the trades and what you would do differently.

Edmonton would rather trade you Larsson or Benning, I don’t think any player in Toronto would be a good enough trade fit to give up Bear

The main thing is the 1st back. I did give away Freddie, because I would like him to win. I could add an extra 1st to the deal. And Reimer isn't really a cap dump. He has been serviceable this year and has shown stretches of brilliance.

That's highly unfortunate that the Oilers would not be willing to part ways with Bear.

Would you part with one of Broberg or Bouchard?

Still doesn't hold any value and have a huge caphit, but this trade isn't helping Toronto and Carolina wont trade 2 1st rd pick tho

For Kapanen? Maybe Broberg but it would be 1-1

Why don’t you replace James Reimer with the Zamboni driver who beat Toronto tonight?

Would you be suggesting a better defenseman coming back?
Like a Pesce + Reimer + potential prospect for Barrie and Andersen?

I would think the Oilers would need to move salary. Something along the lines of Broberg + 1 of Khaira/Chiasson for Kappy?

They will likely sell Barrie. I would also love them to send Freddie to a team that can win a cup.

If it was just Barrie to Carolina, what would give up?

Not if it’s done at the draft this summer but yeah I’d be more willing to add Chiasson if you wanted to make the trade at the deadline

Neither are going anywhere, they are building through backend and the young guys are a way to keep payroll down, they wont get rid of any D this year, Off season I could see them getting rid of Larsson. Which is what the leafs need IMO. Leafs can argue with me all they want. But it is my opinion.

When did we agree on the third round pick? I feel like you took the rug from under my feet haha. But serious that’s probably going to Calgary already from the Lucic trade and tbh in real life I’m not making that trade and neither is Holland but it was a fun Negotiation!

This is all terrible.

2nd rounder is all the Canes will give up for Barrie. Even that is a maybe. You might want to look elsewhere.

You aren’t getting Bean at all

I'd settle with a 1st for Barrie (the weaker of the two naturally). Canes need RHD help with both Hamilton and Pesce out long-term.

I know you want constructive critiques, but gosh, all I can say is your trade-o-meter is on the major fritz. All three of your trade ideas up top are unbalanced toward the Leafs and would be declined immediately, if not rudely. The same goes for all of your secondary ideas in the comments. I mean, I'm trying to figure out who you don't see that a few months of Barrie and one season of Andersen is nowhere near the worth of Pesce by himself. It's bad, man. It's all bad.

I thought out of the 3 trades, the Andersen one was the one getting back subpar value.
Sure Andersen hasn't been his best this season. But the Leafs have hung him out to dry on many of the goals this season. Just going back to the 1st Pittsburgh game this week, there were multiple times where the Pens were alone in the slot and got perfect one timers.
Leafs also let a heck of a lot of shots through to Andersen (as shown by the 48 shots thrown at him last night).
Conor Timmins is a great defensive prospect (probably A or A- level) and Francouz could be a good 1B Goalie. Is that seriously overpaying for a (borderline elite) 1A goalie?
The tandem of Freddy and Grubauer would be solid for an Avs team looking for a cup
