Solving a Devil of a Problem

Created by: HabsRafiki
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 22, 2020
Published: Feb. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1) Turris for Byron saves Nashville $2.4M a year for 3 years and a full $6M for the final year. Getting Turris gives the Habs a versatile forward with something to prove and who thrived in Ottawa.

2) Vegas needs a good RHD and the Habs need a solid LHD and more depth.

3) Habs get a "do-over" with what we can only hope is a humbled PK Subban, plus Zacha, who is a solid, but underwhelming player who was picked way too high and has not lived up to expectations. Devils can reunite Caufield and Hughes. Habs get cap relief from trading Alzner (covers half of Subban's contract), a potentially game-breaking dman with a lot to prove (seems a theme) and a strong, capable young grinder in Zacha.

Kotkeniemi and Poehling get time to grow as players, as do Romanov, Brook, Harris and Primeau.
With expansion, plus Halak, Weal, Kovalchuk and Thompson's contracts ending, Habs will have space to re-sign Gallagher, Danault and Tatar, assuming they're still with the team.

Can’t begin to tell you how hard the Devils laugh at that offer.

I wondered about that, but figured Caufield and a the #32 or 33 pick was worth more than 2 firsts in the 20s. Getting Subban off your books and away from your young players has to be worth something.

lol this is a wild one

Taking on the Turris contract seems like something that could happen, the problem is NSH feels so unpredictable - if they'd do something like that, they have to make the playoffs (and they're currently out of the wildcard)

Probably about as hard as the rest of the league laughed when the Devils traded FOR Subban. On a young team like NJ, there's no one to check Subban's ego. In Montreal, Weber and Price would handle him just fine.

Without even considérant value of this nonsense, the Habs are notre trading caufield. They are definitly not bringing back subban.

I learned long ago to never say never. The core of this team is different than when Pacioretty was a weak captain. Price and Weber are rock solid, Gallagher has grown up, Chiarot is now a fixture and Kovalchuk (if he stays) is a no-nonsense leader. Subban would just be expected to play hockey and keep his mouth shut. Not sure he'll be as good as Petry, but the Alzner move makes it essentially a wash in terms of salary.

Still, the Preds had great leadership too and got tired of him. I think its not about wether or not he can keep his mouth shut, the personnality seems just to much. Anyway, its also dumb to trade an already drafted 1st round pick who doesnt show any sign of regression for future picks. And if you take the trade as a whole, acquiring Alzner, Hudon, Kulak and getting rid of high picks isnt the way to rebuild, even with caufield included.

There are non hockey reasons for the devils to hold on to PK. He bring a national attention to the devils in an area where there are tons of other options. His personality is huge. We need reasons to get butts in seats during the rebuild and msybe have a guy that can attract free agents.

Subban will never return to MTL
he's to selfish and our coach would bench him
If lehkonen gets scratched and he loves Lehkonen
Subbans boned before he even put on a jersey under Claude.

the others were reasonable enough to talk about
but the 3rd trade is like making a trade for Galchenyuk
its a nostalgia move ignoring why we moved them and the fact they've each been traded to multiple teams since moving

I can't disagree, though I would like to believe the current team is tight enough to contain him and that he has something to prove to himself and to the NHL.

I would disagree that Subban and Galchenyuk are comparable. At least Subban once was someone. Galchenyuk has been an underachiving failure his whole career.

Good points. If I were the Devils, I'd be focused on getting excellent veterans to teach this exciting young core how to be good pros. Subban won't do that. Indeed, he has quite the opposite effect.

true but that doesnt make me want him back anymore or less then chucky as in my mind they're the same on that level aka our past .

Subban got greedy and greedy people should have to endure this type of struggle as Kovalchuk did with his ridiculous contract .
i do miss his personallity though however his 3rd period penalties on bone head calls like Diving or embellishment is something i'm as glad to be rid of as his league leading turnovers constantly top 10 while a habs

i still say Lucic retained 1m for Alzner straight up .

MTL can either keep him if he becomes the protector of youth and 1/10th as good as he was in BOS are Claude Julien
or MTL can retain some and trade him a lot easier then Alzner has been lol

Alzners way cheaper to buy out , almost 1/3rd the cost of Lucic and half the cap hit for doing it
Lucic's not working out then send him our way because he's the type of guy who might be perfect to protect our young guys as we have no Tkachuk to defend and injured teammate like Chabot. We also have no one capable of 200+ hits a year and to send message's . during a rebuild a guy like this is important otherwise you're looking at spending a lot of his early years on IR

in 2 years if MTL can get Lucic scoring 30 points consistently we can make a profit on him if we retain i'm sure of it as if nothing else he's the guy come playoffs you want on your side not against you
