Yes I agree. Analytics suggest that Mitch Marner is a below replacement level player throughout his career. Although given his performance from this season alone, that’s what it kinda looks like.

What do you mean by "don't work"? They are literally just a tool to measure all the things that get old school hockey minds praise anyway, just in a more nebulous, vague way.

The problem is everyone is trying to find a "one size fits all" analytics tool, but in order to effectively use analytics (and I'm talking about more than just hockey here), you have to take ALL factors into account. Context matters, and a lot of analytics tools out there aren't able to fully capture context or have a deficiency in capturing some variable. Basically you shouldn't use analytics solely, but you also shouldn't completely disregard them.

Wrong, going off the xGAR --> market value calculator, Marner is only slightly overpaid (by like a few hundred K) even by GAR he's still a legitimate top liner (on a three year sample size)

Fun fact, CAR uses analytics way more (and way better) than TOR, guys like Barrie it Ceci would have never been traded for (or signed) by an actual analytical GM...

Wow I didn’t know that. I hope you are right because the majority of hockey who I interact with on social media believe that Marner is nothing special.

Exactly!!! It’s a combination of points, analytics, and eye test which prove to be useful to measure a player.

Was Barrie an analytics disaster in Colorado? I know he wasn’t a defensive dynamo but that’s never been the plan for the Leafs.

He has only 2 points in the last 4 games. Not good enough.

He had a worse bet impact that Martin marincin, so yes (basically average offensively, just brutal defensively)

I meant when he was in Colorado. He couldn’t have been on par with Marincin then. That’s crazy. Haha. I suppose Marincin got the easier matchups but still.

No, that's using him in COL vs marincin last year, using RAPM which takes into account QoT and QoC
