agreed
if they were both UFA's and we didnt know if they'd re-sign
sure 1 for 1 makes sense

this is just given away a player in his prime playing well for someone on IR you have to over pay to keep.
Petry took less once , if we asked i think he would again
he remembers how hard it was in EDM and likely doesnt want to risk being on a team that expects him to be superman .

Petry
for
Kappanen
Barrie
3rd (if petry re-signs longterm MTL gets a 2nd)

MTL re-signs Barrie on a 2 year deal worth 6m with the understanding we'd help him re-establish his value and sell him high to a contender as guaranteed by a 12 team trade list submitted each year by him at the TDL . Barrie gets paid and the promise of a cup while getting to play behind Weber who might be able to help him improve his shot.

MTL gets a middle 6 youth prospect who'd fit nicely by Lehkonen-Kotkanemi , a 2nd paid D to play behind Weber a few years and a conditional pick for Petry's contract with 1 year term

barrie helps us long term if its a sign and trade. he's almost 4 years younger. would u rather the habs resign petry to a 5-6 year deal at age 32 or habs sign barrie at 28 to a 6-7 year deal and he ends at age 34-35? take your pick. this fills the needs for the habs to compete next year and the year after, because you arent getting a 24 year old top 4 right shot to replace petry if you trade him right now

so youd rather sign a 32 year old exiting his prime to a 5-6 year deal or a 28 year in the middle of his prime to a 6-7 year deal. you decide

I rather have one more year of Petry on a reasonable contract, while he's still playing the best hockey of his career and is a safe bet for 50 points, and then try to resign him if possible.
Instead of signing Barrie to a "6-7 year deal at 7.3M"? for a a guy who's looking like the next Mike Green.
Also, Petry has that ability to defend, which call me crazy is maybe more valuable...

Barrie will be 29 at the start of next season, which is not that young. At that point, if you believe Petry should leave, I'd rather have the CAR deal that was rumoured to a 1st + Jake Bean

Straight up, 1 for 1, Montreal would refuse very quickly. Petry is better than Barrie. All around.

ESPECIALLY DEFENSIVELY!
