We will see how he does on the Capitals, but if the past few games are an indication, he will be lucky to get over 1 million in the offseason.

We got a 3rd round pick for somebody we got for free a month ago. I'm just happy MB didn't sign him to the reported 3.5 Million for next year.

Maybe 1.5 + 2 on performance bonus, not 3.5 straight up

1 points in his past 7 games with top PP time. Don't think he's going to be as good as you think he will be. He's a good locker room guy and his work ethic is off the charts though.

If he can help get the Caps to play harder each and every game, that alone is worth the 3rd.

“Demoted“? There’s little difference in our top 3 lines. And while this isn’t a loss for the habs by any means, it’s great for the caps. And you obviously haven’t been watching the games if you think that Kovalchuk hasn’t been playing well, even in the last 7 games, points or not.

For the first ten or so games, he was playing above 20 Minutes a night. for the past 5 games, he's played around 16 Minutes a night. He has definitely been demoted.

We picked up an asset for a guy nobody wanted and it only helps us. Maybe it's a fair trade because both teams get a boost, but Montreal definitely did great here.

Fair. But Montreal also got a 3rd round pick for somebody who was signed for nothing a month ago. Guess you can call it a fair trade.

Yep for sure. Reports now is that he wanted to be traded to a contender so I don't know if that contract rumour was true or not.

Dude how mad are you. It’s a great pick up for the capitals and it’s also a great deal for the habs. Why are you pestering everyone in the comments. Caps power ply blows right now and if he can help it improve it’s worth a 3rd. He’s also going to be playing easier minutes on a way better team

He left here playing on the 3rd line and still wasn't producing, but with a way more talented team, hopefully he can finish plays instead of having to do it all. I like this trade for the Caps, but people are acting like we just traded a 100 PT winger in his prime for nothing. It is what it is.

Out of forwards on the habs, Kovalchuk is 2nd (behind Danault) in TOI per game in the last 5 games. Yes it may have gotten a bit evened out between the top 3 lines, but he wasn’t having his ice time specifically reduced by any means.

I’ll give the habs the benefit of the doubt, saying it was fair because they picked him up off the scrap heap, but if he had been on the habs previously, this would not be a good trade. Especially when Marco fricking Scandella gets a 2nd, while Kovalchuk doesn’t.

We are lucky we got anything at all. Nobody wanted him a month ago for free and he has 1 point in his past 7 games. Atleast Scandella was doing what he was here to do.

He can’t be any worse than panik. I mean it’s not like the capitals still have Connolly on the 3rd line

Probably not. But the Capitals could've had Kovalchuk for nothing a month ago and now just gave up a 3rd round pick. Hopefully he can give you guys depth, but I still like it for Montreal.

It’s a 3rd.... capitals had 2 of them and kovy was a risk at the time and looked to be a lost cause

Fair. Good thing Montreal took that risk and got a 3rd out of it. 30 other teams could've had him for free, but they didn't.

Gotta get that 50% salary retained on that enormous 700k contract.

Fair deal, but I thought he was worth a conditional 3rd that move up to a 2nd if Washington win's a round or two or they re-sign Kovy

Yup! Exactly what should have been done.

NJ should have gotten him (instead of Montreal) and just sit his ass on the bench for the rest of the season. Just for old times sake.

I'm more disappointed by Habs retaining salary than by the 3 round pick. This means, habs have now retained salary for Kovalchuk and Scandella, and are 1 away from the 3 limit.

This means even if a team comes in tomorrow and offers the world for Petry and Tatar, but can only make it work if Montreal was to retain, the habs cannot do that now.
