That's a very solid deal. AAV isn't high and he will be 33 when the deal expires.

This makes it worth the Islanders trading a 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Paid high end 3C money for a 3C who will be playing into his 30's on the contract who is currently having a career year and looks primed for regression. Gave him a full NTC and a 16 team NTC for 4 years.
This is a HUGE OOF.

The thing is that closest comparables, Coyle, Nelson and Backlund are significantly better producers.

That's an overpayment for sure. Pageau's good, but not 5 million dollars good.

Pageau really cashed in on his contract year! It's a very risky contract, but if he can play a passable 2C for them, it'll pay off and perhaps even be a bargain.

Career high (this year) 20 goals and 43 points.

I won't call this an overpay, because UFA C's are expensive, but if I was an Islander's fan I would be expecting the player of the last 3 years, not this year. If you're happy with that for 5 million, so be it.

Honestly the AAV is pretty fair..
5 year term would have been better, but thats the business sometimes.

He plays both ends of the ice and he plays hard but expect his stats to go down playing for the Islanders system.

He's really a borderline #2 C in my opinion. How many #3 C's have 24G and 40 points right now? I'm guessing none. He's also performed exceedingly well on a bad team and he's versatile. This is an A+ move.

Eller is a great value. Clutch player, too. I'd rather have him at his cap hit, but I still really like Pageau for the Islanders. 24G on a bottom tier team. 20G at 5on5 or SH.

Bro he's coming off 12 + 29 + 33 point seasons .... the AVV is very high for a player of his caliber.

And Ottawa has been playing the s*** out of him this season to pump his trade value.

Enjoy.
