Honestly probably perfect term and AAV. Maybe a year longer than it should be, but it's a solid deal.

Just about right for the aging curve. Muzzin helps in both ends and this is easily less than what he'd get in the open market.

This is a good signing. Maybe a little less would have been good but still okay.

Good contract. Not too long and exactly at market value. Sounds like he can be exposed to seattle too, so no debilitating NTC. Sounds like it is very front loaded so if there is a worst case scenario it will be easier to move.
Some tidy work!

signed on trade deadline day because leafs thing hockey revolves around them.
They could have done this at any time. They didn't improve their blue line. Tells a lot about what they think their chances really are.

Yes, nothing to do with the fact that they were trying to add before the deadline. That way, if they announced the extension first, it would've eaten away from their available salary pool. Of course you do this after you're done.

I had him at 4 x 5,5M since last years Tradeline, hoped for 4 x 5,3M.......( toldya again )

Now we need two more Muzzins for the right side, hopefully 26 and 27 years old.....

his salary was already set. It had nothing to do with the trade deadline. It was leaked out days ago that the deal was done.
Where do you come up with this stuff.

I guarantee you in the same situation Mark Hunter would've not sold Barrie.

Mark hunter and brother dale routinely deal high end players in the ohl when the knights are good but not good enough to win, retooling the team.
This teams asset management is horrible, Barrie is horrible for this team, this team if they make the playoffs is bounced again in the first round, with nothing but more embarrassment or more pissed off fans

It had to do with tagging space. Teams are only allowed to have so much of next season's cap you can allocate before and during the current season.

Signing Muzzing before the deadline would have limited potential deals with term because it would have reduced the tagging space, so they were waiting to sign Muzzin until they were sure they were not needing that tagging space in any deadline trades

uh huh...like they couldn't have done it the day after trade deadline?
Lets be honest. A. they needed to distract their lack of doing nothing and B. had to pretend to do something for attention.

It's the leafs

This is close in terms of value over a 4 year term. Muzzin will probably provide value pretty much in line with where he is being paid. Likely able to be even better in years 1-2 with being a little over paid in years 3-4.

Where I think the Leafs did pretty well is not having to overpay in term or dollars for a D who kind of fits every teams ideal 2nd pairing guy. Some grit, some toughness, moves the puck well, plays both ends well, some leadership. Those players that the old school and analytics crowds like equally are usually destined to be overpaid.

What could make this deal better will depend on structure. If the NTC terms aren't bad in years 3-4 and he is making less in cash than cap hit, the Leafs could very well have a D that will probably be worth more than his cap hit early in the deal, and actually trade him for positive value at the end.

There is still a bit of a gamble, they are signing a 30+ player for four years and paying him in a way where he needs to be at least your 3rd best D, but I think with the teams needs, and the way this type of player will get valued league wide, this is pretty solid.

Fair value year #1
slight overpay #2
Anchor year#3,4.

doesnt help their cap issues, still have to fix their roster make up, and deal some of their high priced forwards to improve their D corps.

The dude just turned 30 ... maybe you should chill with assuming he'll be an "anchor" by 32.

Some people man.
