Nyquist, Eberle, Reilly Smith, Backlund all similar stats and signed for 5-5.5 around their 30th birthdays
Nyqvist is comparable in age to Smith, but had 60 points the season before his current contract.
Eberle - if you take out his 28 year old season (a down year) and add his previous 5 seasons together, he had 122 goals and 285 points. Comparatively Craig Smith had 105 goals and 213 points in his previous 5 seasons minus last year. Comparable for goals somewhat, but definitely not points. Eberle has over 80 points more than him over that time.
Reilly Smith signed his contract as a 25 year old after a 25 goal, 50 point season.
Backlund is the most comparable forward, but he is a center and they are typically valued more.
Smith will also be the oldest of all 4 of these players when he starts his new contract (age 31) , so all in all, these aren't really great players to use for comparison. And especially after the Ladd, Okposo, Neal, Lucic deals that were signed when they were all around Smith's age now, I don't see any team putting up that much money for that long to a player that was not as good as any of those players prior to signing their contracts. He will likely get a 2-4 year ranging from $3.5m - $4.75m depending on the number of years. More money for less years, less money for more years.
