Shaw maybe. Everyone else could be useful to anther team. They all bring something and would get value back. Whether or not it’s the value that was suggested here is another story

Habs dealt Shaw for a reason, you know. You'll need to retain cap for them to take him back.

What are you referring to, the Kapanen trade I proposed? It's not about value of the players alone, but the cap space, dependability of murphy and affordable defensemen that have built cases to be full time NHLer's that it gives Toronto. Those things have value and are things Toronto needs. Especially to a GM who is trying to balance the Cap, the Chemistry, and the future of both of those ongoing variables. As for Shaw, his chemistry and role in Montreal were much more suitable for him, a role in which I think he could stay healthier for longer periods of time. His coming back to CHI was just more Bowman Nostalgia trades that were never going to work. But to offset the health issues with the 2nd rounder (which don't hit their cap if he is hurt) I added the 3rd rounder. Retaining Salary... Fine. Left plenty of room for that and the possibility of Seabrook coming off LTIR. The rest is meh... I'll take whatever for Maata and Carpenter. I just figured the 4th rounder might sweeten him up enough to get a 2nd back.

Why the F would NJ do that trade? Smith doesn’t move the needle for them so he’s not worth dropping down in the draft ~30 positions.

And that Shaw deal. Hawks send 2nd and 3rd to get Shaw. Then we send Shaw and 3rd to get the second back. So after all is said and done, Hawks basically just send two 3rd rounders to Montreal for free. Lol

NJ has plenty of cap space and a ton of picks with a decent team that needs some role players. Zack smith is a reliable faceoff guy and PKer on a fair contract that only has next season left on it. Sweeten that up with an early 2nd rounder and a prospect maybe... and I think their AZ first rounder is a fine return. Especially when assuming AZ is gonna make the playoffs and that pick will most likely be a mid to late 1st rounder.

And as far as the shaw thing goes. It's bowmans mistake. And his fault, but we get that cap space back which is also a valuable commodity in the salary cap era. And as I stated in another comment Shaw's role in Montreal suited him and their team better than it suits him being in CHI. Bowman flipped the nostalgia coin on Shaw and lost. But recoups a 2nd on it. I don't understand how you people don't see cap space and contract length as a commodity in this league. You just look at things at face value. That's not how balancing an organization works.

Not to mention all of those moves allow for Pietrangelo to be signed at all. Which is like that biggest transaction in this whole thing that none of you have even acknowledged. lol
