Super Weird Idea

Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 27, 2020
Published: Feb. 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Ok, so this is just a really weird thing that I was thinking about and there may even be a rule against it that I'm unaware of but I just decided to post it just to get some thoughts.

SITUATION: So this type of thing would not apply very often, as it takes a pretty specific scenario for it to make sense. The idea is RENTING/LOANING players with TERM. Basically where this would make sense is when a team that expected to make the playoffs fell out of the race for one reason or another (i.e injuries, bad goaltending, etc.) but thinks they will rebound the following season or a team that wasn't quite good enough but was still developing young players wants to be able to make a push next year.

HOW IT WORKS: So if a team is in the situation described above, they won't want to trade away from their roster in a way that hurts their team the following year, but they also don't want to finish out of the playoffs without recouping assets. So what I am proposing is loaning players with term for only the remainder of the season. Teams would make a handshake agreement that the player will be traded back to the original team in the summer. Collateral would be sent as part of the deadline deal and then given back in the summer trade.

EXAMPLE: Basic idea of what I mean below. The point is not the value, just the theory. This theoretical deal would take place at this past deadline.
Trades
MTL
  1. 2020 2nd round pick (TOR)
  2. 2021 1st round pick (TOR)
  3. 2021 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Picks are sent to MTL. Two 2nds for Danault for the remainder of the season and playoffs. 1st for collateral. Once the summer rolls around the Leafs send Danault back to MTL, and get their first back.

Interesting concept but not sure what the player being traded or his teammates or his team's fan base would think of this type of deal as the team is really giving up on its season even if it is getting back assets. Suspect it would also upset other teams who are competing for a playoff spot with the team that is receiving a reinforcement player and could hurt the entire entegrity of the NHL and its teams and GM's and all of these type of deals could be questioned.

I get the teammate/fan base angle, that would suck to see that your team is calling it. However I disagree with the other teams/integrity of the NHL points. If trades like these became normalized, there would be no reason for other teams to complain as these types of deals would be open to anyone.

I would be concerned that a GM could have his buddy GM cut a friendly deal to help him out to bring in a player to ensure his team makes the playoffs.

I don't think the GM's are really THAT close. I can't see a scenario where a GM would not take the offer that is best for his team, regardless of personal relationships with the other GM's. Besides, if that would happen in this scenario, then don't you think it already does happen with traditional rentals. What about this makes it different?

And just to be clear, I'm not saying this is a perfect idea. I literally just came up with it and immediately started typing lol. It is definitely something that would need fine tuning if it ever came into practice, so thanks for the input. It's really helpful to recognizing potential problems.
