Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 3, 2020
Published: Mar. 3, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
With the expansion draft coming I don't think the Pens will hold onto both Jarry and Murray. They'd def lose one or have to give away an asset to avoid them being taken.
Carolina needs a solid goalie and have plenty prospects to spare.
Nashville gets out from under Turris's contract.

I agree with your logic on the goalie tandem, and Jarry might be the cheaper option moving forward. I just don't really know if Murray/Jarry would be the definitive selection for Seattle, but it would make sense to not take a chance. They can get a much better player for Murray though. I like Haydn Fleury, always have. The value of the Carolina package isn't much better than getting another year of Murray and losing him for nothing though. And I would 100% rather have Bjugstad for another year than Kyle Turris for 4 years. I love your contracts here though

He's an RFA... Team x doesn't want to offersheet, negotiates a trade, and gets permission to negotiate contract, negotiates contact, player signs contract, player becomes traded...

Well aware it is rare but he is an RFA and I wanted to ballpark the kinda contract he'd be asking for reinforcing that he probably would have to moved as the Pens aren't really built to dedicate a lot of money to the goalie position. Especially paying both Murray and Jarry raises.

Yeah I thought about getting a better player but also didn't want to over inflate Murray's value. But don't sleep on Morgan Geekie. Complete package center with size, and is a good faceoff guy. Fleury just seemed to fit the need. Big, skates well solid defensively. Jake bean would probably have been an easy replacement as he is a better prospect. Could probably increase the draft choice as well.

I was actually meaning to say that I didn't know who Morgan Geekie is, so that can be a big part of what I missed. I also think as far as teams that would be interested go, you picked the right one

Understandable.

Now to the trade. I don't like it awesome face HA!

$5.5M RFA compensation would be a 1st and a 3rd.

Fleury is Riikola/Ruhwedel level, blah.
Reimer is near cap dump level. I get the vet backup aspect, but at $3.4M it's a bad get for a team flirting with the cap ceiling. That cap hit puts him in negative value to the Pens for me.
Geekie is very interesting, but barely even top 5 forward prospects for Carolina, maybe 4th-6th forward wise. Good but not great.
3rd matches the 3rd

So, vs offer-sheet compensation, you are passing on Carolina's 1st (#20ish) for an okay prospect, a #7D and a cap dump goalie. With Rutherford's poor recent trading this wouldn't necessarily surprise me, but I would hope for more. A better prospect plus certainly retention on Reimer.

I was looking more at Pens need the offer sheet value which lets face it isn't real value because how often are there offer sheets so the 1st and 3rd comparison is kinda out the window. Carolina probably could be squeezed for more. Definitely a higher draft pick, suzuki instead of geekie. I think Fleury would be a diamond in the rough and solid shutdown guy. But Bean is the better flashier D prospect.
I wanted to err on the side of not making it too lopsided for the Pens but probably didn't go far enough.
