Why would we gamble on Jack Johnson? All of our D prospects are LD. If we were to take a bad contract on D it has to be on the right side. Also the Devils would be crazy to give draft picks right now.

because the Devils are bad? You get another prospect with him to play under Butcher and Smith (if he's ready). Also, you don't have to keep Johnson in the NHL, if they can get a free prospect for taking on a bad contract, why not?

You don't take bad contracts just because you have the room. The Devils already have 4 guys they expect to play LD at the NHL level in Bahl, Ty Smith, Butcher, Dakota Mermis (who is surprisingly good in his own end). Based on his recent play Micro Mueller might stick around. They have gaping holes on the right side of the team in RD and RW. Especially in the pipeline. We also have to take in that we have to pay Bratt, Blackwood and Gusev soon. I don't see us taking another bad LD.

He did not want to play in Edmonton. What did the other teams in that area not see that they didnt want to sign him? That is the question.

It's not that he's necessarily bad. He's playing top line minutes in the AHL, but he's a Dumoulin duplicate. GMJR also described Pettersson as the same thing. He wouldn't have much room to be able to grow within the team, so why not use him to get rid of the Johnson contract

Story I heard, John Marino and his brother researched every team including depth chart, style, who would be interested and where he may have best chance to play in NHL. Chia really was the one who drafted him so with new group in charge he asked for a trade out. If anything I’d say his brother should be hired somewhere as a pro scout or front office role. Probably knows more about each team then most GMs do

Makes sense why the pick was conditional on him signing. That’s pretty awesome!!!

LOL if Oilers win the cup, than his brother sure is not looking so good as a pro scout

That's not quite right. Marino and other such as Fox likely told ALL NHL teams in their draft year they would going the NCAA graduation route, partly because they would be UFAs upon graduation.
Oilers just took a 6th round gamble hoping Marino would come out early . So it wasn't so much Marino didn't want Edmonton as much he want a choice as a UFA, as did Vesey and Fox.

It depends on who Colorado prefers. If Byram comes up next year they have Girard, Byram, Graves, Cole, Zadorov. All of them can play in a top 4, but there's only 3 spots for 5 guys

He would have been by August 15th 2019, if he hadn't signed. That's why the Oilers had no leverage and had to trade him for whatever they could get.

He would have been last summer, so the Oilers had a one in thirty one chance to sign him. Remember what Vesey did when he had the UFA after graduating university.

POJ as a throwaway to get rid of Johnson is dumb. Just keep Johnson as third pairing LD, his cap hit is manageable.
