Do you scout based off of the stats you can get off of EliteProspects? Because Byram has rounded out his game tremendously, has dealt with nagging injuries and has recently turnt in one of the best offensive stretches by a defenseman the WHL has seen in a while. Yes, Dach has surpassed expectations and Kakko hasn't lived up to them, but Kakko still has more long-term upside. I assume you have Heinola at 9 because he put up 5 points in 8 NHL games before going back to Finland. Did you actually watch those games? Have you actually watched Spencer Knight at BC this year? Or Cam York at Michigan? Or have you seen how incredibly well Soderstrom has been playing for Brynas? Or do you look at a stat sheet and think that will tell you everything you need to know?
Great questions. The short answer is...all of the above, but that's kinda cop out. I get it. AND all of these are clearly subjective. I could have factored in injuries more so than I did. Peytron Krebs is also crushing it, but was injured. That's a fair criticism. The number of spots Ville jumped...I can understand that's questionable. I certainly am factoring in his 8 NHL games. Having played just 1 NHL game would be a plus, but to have success checks off one box...your game translates. If Player A...never played any NHL games it's hard to say their game translates because there's zero proof. AND many players don't pan out.
Specifically, Byram. Yeah I 100% agree he's making a fierce comeback. It's still not the year he had last year. It's also not what COL asked him to go back and do...get better defensively. The Giants are largely the same team...every team has some kind of turnover... I would expect him to step up his game. VAN is 3rd in their division. We'll see what they do in the playoffs. BUT now the comparison comes into play.
It can't just be old draft position is an automatic and now how is each player doing compared to last year. It's 1 factor, but there are too many others. Why shouldn't guys like Zegras jump Byram? He's crushing it @ BU in a league that doesn't have high scoring and crushed it in WJC. What about Mortiz Seider? Jumped into the AHL...and much harder league than the WHL and he's playing great too. So again, it's subjective, but other players drafted near each other means their ceilings are close enough and the league you play in plus your own results matter. It's not that Byram can't be a great NHL player, it's just also respecting that other players can have tremendous years.
Obviously I can't watch every game of every team. I have to go off what I see. Example. I do watch Big Ten hockey. I have the Big Ten Network. The Michigan games I've seen...I can see Beecher has a tremendous impact on the game despite not hitting the scoring sheet that much. He's out there in the final minutes. Same Team...Cam York has more points than Beecher. He's been largely invisible to me. Doesn't mean I saw his best games. Doesn't mean he can't be a great pro either. It's hard to score in the NCAA. But this is what I see. Yeah, Subjective but clearly not just following a stat sheet.
The top 3 all play in the NHL. Regardless of anything else playing in the NHL is far greater than any other league. I don't see KK's ceiling as high anymore. Most of his production comes from the PP which Panarin is on...and obviously with a man advantage. 5V5 is more important to me which is where Dach dominates both Hughes and KK. Quite honestly, the only reason Dach isn't #1 is because when I watch Hughes play. I can see his skating and vision are amazing. If he was on a better team I think he'd be doing better. KK??? The Rangers aren't THAT bad. they're still fighting for a playoff spot.
