Had Matthews born two days earlier

Created by: TheChief
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2020
Published: Mar. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Matthews was born in September 17, 1997. The last day of draft picks eligible for 2015 NHL Entry Draft was September 15. Had he born two days earlier, this team would look very different lol.

I'd guess that Matthews would've been picked 3rd (behind McDavid and Eichel), with ARI picking him, therefore leaving Strome as the 4th overall pick in 2015. This would've meant that TOR hadn't picked Marner with that pick.

In this case, 2016 first overall pick would have had to be Laine. So he'd be currently in TOR.

Naturally there would be many other moves including these, but this ain't so serious post really.
Trades
1.
TOR
  1. Schmaltz, Nick
Additional Details:
Schmaltz for Strome trade would've never happened, since ARI never drafted Strome.
2.
3.
TOR
  1. Laine, Patrik
Additional Details:
Laine would've been picked instead of Matthews as first overall pick in 2016.

They would still pick Marner with that pick. Or maybe Arizona would still pick Strome.. you never know!

I'd say that if BUF had to choose from Eichel or Matthews, they would've chosen Eichel, since Matthews hadn't still played in Europe for a year. I think Eichel would've been ranked higher...

if matthews had been born 2 days earlier he also would have gone to europe a year earlier. matthews started playing junior hockey a year later because he was younger, if he was two days older they would be on the same path as eichel. he just had to wait an extra year to start

Arizona would've picked Matthews and Toronto would've picked Marner. Both are their respective teams hometown guys.

That said, Toronto would've been incredibly different, as the 2016 field wouldn't have had a consensus number one. Early reports had Chychrun and Max Jones behind Matthews, and Mark Hunter was still on the Maple Leafs so Tkachuk and Juolevi could've been options as well. I don't think they would've made the playoffs that season without Matthews and Tavares probably would've re-upped with the Islanders.

dont come at me crying with this matthews plays with better players bs, he has shown that he can play with guys like kapanen and johnsson and still produce. also not matthews fault that jack has to play for one of the worst franchises in the nhl

leafs needed a centre, i think they would have taken strome at 4, led ohl in scoring that year and stepped up when connor was out with a broken hand

i get it but still, i think thats what made them choose marner over hanifin, given the choice i think theyw ould have taken strome, leafs were in dire need of a number 1 center and strome fit the bill, big two way center that the leafs needed, marner was the only london kinght he ever drafted so it wasnt like hunter had the only london knights mentality

I don't think he would've moved to NLA that young. He would've been the youngest player in the draft. Assuming he didnt:
He had a 155 point season in the USHL. Strome had a 129 point season in the OHL.

Because of the bias' that seem to exist (Canada vs US, size) in a lot of teams/scouts it probably would've been like this:
1. McDavid
2. Eichel
3. Strome
4. Matthews
5. Hanifin
6. Marner
