One more cap crunched year

Created by: fluff118
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 6, 2020
Published: Mar. 6, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Two biggest unknowns for the fans right now:
1) Does Hank retire?
2) Does Staal retire?

If both happen, the Rangers will be busy this offseason.

If one happens (Staal), they will find a a 1-2 year replacement UFA (Lundkvist/Miller/Hajek all not ready yet).

If the other happens (Hank), they might add a 4c and push Howden out to LW, and Kravtsov may play another year in Hartford.

John Davidson has preached patience, and I think next year is the last year we'll need to be patient.

About 24 million comes off the books after next year, and only minor raises going out.

Also, Hartford will be a pretty good team next year again, with Miller, Reunanen, Pajuniemi, Lundkvist, maybe Lias, and Huska and Wall. Possibly Kravtsov depending on what happens with NYR offseason/cap implications.

VERY bright future for NYR organization all around.

Unfortunately neither probably retire.. these guys arent going to see another nhl contract after next season so if I were them I'd watch the games from the press box and collect my millions 4.5 for staal and 5.5 for hank

I mean even in that case, just dont over pay Fast, bridge & trade Tony and dont roster 3 goalies, trade Georgiev and have Hank back up... Its not hard to roll the year forward without massive change and still get some space.

I completely agree, that's why I left them in the roster. It's going to be super tight, but I think this is very close to what they put on the ice next year. Only changes might be:
1) Smith traded
2) Fast not re-signed
3) Kravtsov not called up

Otherwise, not much to change for next year. The following year is the start of the next window of contention, which should hopefully last at least 5 years, if not 6-8.

Niether are retiring. You could buy them out though or pay to trade

"without massive change"

I would have to disagree with the one thing that saves you the most money...bridge and trade Tony D. That is a massive change to this teams future.

Georgiev = not a massive change
Fast = not a massive change (but 2.5 is a discount, not an overpay). He'll fetch 3m easily.

Buyout = opposite of patience. I really don't think they will be buying anyone out this year (perhaps Staal, but that's it).

Pay to trade = opposite of patience, unless it only costs pennies (like Smith + 5th for a 6th or 7th).

Neither are patient moves no, but they would allow you to get salary space back and not wreck the goalie situation

Meh. Tony is a painfully obvious sell high candidate. They arent moving Trouba and Fox is miles better than Tony. You cant pay a 3rd & PP2 guy 5m+ (+the opp cost of the middle to top 6 F you could get for him in a trade) when you got Nils and others in the pipeline.
