Description
I hate having to criticize my favourite player but this has got to be the worst season in Mitch Marner’s hockey career. Other than a few highlight reel plays, he’s been a total disaster. He just doesn’t look as sharp compared to previous years. Making terrible decisions with the puck as he’s always trying to make an extra play or stick handle that kills any chance to get a goal. He seems tentative away from the puck as well. I think one of the reasons why he could be struggling is cuz he’s playing with Matthews, therefore, he has less freedom to play with the puck. He’s forced to play a more simple game because Matthews is so big, strong & smooth skater who can generate his own space when in possession, so Marner is having trouble adjusting away from that super flashy & creative style. He’s more suited for centers like Tavares & Kadri. They aren’t as big, strong & smooth skaters therefore they have to do more off the puck work to get their goals. This gives Marner more freedom to create with his skillset. Even with Bozak in his rookie year & Dvorak in Juniors, that’s how he was so successful. Another reason is that Marner is not playing with any confidence at all. He’s way over his head after getting grossly overpaid in the off-season - he should’ve got the Rantanen deal at most because Rantanen is the better player anyway IMO. Honestly if the Leafs sign a good stay at home defenseman who can skate like DeMelo / Tanev, they are set to be cup contenders. But they have a black hole who is holding them back, that is Marner. A change of scenery has to happen if he doesn’t get his act together. I don’t want him to go down the same path as Galchenyuk & Yakupov.

Yet again, a typical Leafs fan. Overreacts to every hiccup and every small success. When things are good, they're amazing, but when things are mediocre they're hell. Habs & Leafs fans are terrible with this.

It's a pretty terrible trade, very pointless and reaks of trolling

He hasn't been that good but this trade is horrible. One could even say the leafs finishing talent agaisnt LA is better then this trade

Justin Bourne of Hockey Central stated that the maximum cap hit Marner should’ve got was 6 million. Since he got grossly overpaid (by around 5 million), it is harder to get higher value for him in a trade.

No one celebrated the Leafs’ success this season. They’ve been too unconvincing all around.

That's not really true at all. Hes very comparable to Aho. He probably should have been paid around the low end of 9. Hes still a fantastic player who can put up 90 points and be decent defensively but a whole lot more his being expected of him. He wanted to be paid like a superstar and now hd is being judged like a superstar based off his contract. He should be judged on that level because of the tantrum he threw in the summer about being disrespected and now it's getting to him. That's why he told the other players to stay off social media, he sees the criticism. To say hes worth 5 million is laughable

That's just not true. There's been tons of claims that Leafs are elite and cup contenders at points along this season, particularly around the beginning. Just 'cause you were skeptical all year, doesn't mean the fanbase as a whole was.

Yes Marner’s dad was very outspoken during the summer about how his son should be the captain of the team & how he should get 12 million etc. That really ruined Mitch’s image & he is now viewed negatively by all hockey people especially since he got that big contract. Marner should’ve got Rantanen’s cap hit at most. I think Rantanen is the better player anyway.

well assuming that this is correct information, I guess Justin Bourne of hockey central isn't all that smart
