John Gibson

Created by: SankFeravalli
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 8, 2020
Published: Mar. 8, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Would the Ducks consider moving John Gibson? Obviously it would cost a TON. But with the Duck rebuilding during Gibson’s prime, does it make more sense for them to capitalize on his value while it’s at it’s highest? Or do they ride out the rebuild and rely on Gibson during the rebuild and hope to be back as contenders for the second half of Gibson’s contract?
For Colorado, Gibson would be a perfect add in net, where they’ve had some consistency issues with Grubauer and Francouz. He’s signed long term at a very reasonable number, and he solidifies Colorado’s weakest position for the better part of the MacKinnon/Rantanen/Makar window.

Yeah for that return. Basically 2 1st round picks and an established NHL goalie?

Not for that return. To consider trading Gibson, two of Rantanen, Makar and the 2020 first would be required. We need a RD, not a LD.

By the same token, you don't trade one of the five best goalies in the league, ever.

Keep in mind that we might be getting the next Cale Makar in the draft this year. You won't be getting the next John Gibson anytime soon, any way.

Consistency issues? What you talking about Willis? Francouz is 7th is SV%, 9th in GAA, Grubauer is 22nd in SV%, 21st in GAA, the Avs are 6th in the league in PTs, 2nd in RW, 3rd in GDiff, 3rd in GA. Grubauer took them as an 8th seed to game 7 against the Sharks. I get Gibson is better, but he has never won a Cup and has a losing record in the playoffs. So for that unknown, you want to trade a stud #1D prospect, your starting goalie who has better stats this year and more playoff wins recently, your best goalie prospect and a #1. That’s straight stupid. I’ve said this in multiple posts, Byram is one of 5 untouchables right now on the Avs.

Patrick Roy said he would never play another game for the Montreal Canadiens and demanded a trade. You're probably too young to remember that.

Your points are all well taken, if disputable, but that Gibson is an "unknown" is simply silly. That he is one of the five best goalies in the league is not only known, it's intelligently unquestioned.

I’m not saying he isn’t, during the regular season. And not a single one of my point is disputable, all stats are pulled from NHL.com, Byram was the 4th overall pick and is pretty much the consensus top defensive prospect not just with the Avs but in the NHL. Gibson has never won a cup, hasn’t won a playoff game since 16-17 and he was swept in the playoffs last time he played. Yes it’s a team game, but IMO the small incremental gain you get by acquiring him isn’t worth the potential gain you would have to trade away in Byram because no way Anaheim doesn’t do a trade where he isn’t coming back.

I’ll add to that.

One of the best all time melt downs, Tremblay straight embarrassed him by leaving him in the game after giving up not 5 goals, not 6, not 7, not 8, but 9 goals.

The single point I felt was disputable is that this trade would be "straight stupid." The possibility that Byram will turn out to be the next Jesse Puljujarvi or Lias Andersson (or Nail Yakupov!), although very small, is still larger than the chance that once he's behind an actually contending team, John Gibson won't win a Stanley Cup. Being objective, now, don't you think that he would have done just as well as Jordan Binnington or Braden Holtby? If you think he wouldn't do better than Philipp Grubauer is going to do this year, you're charming yourself.

Straight stupid might have been harsh but like I said the potential cost out weighs the potential gains IMO. As for Binnington who the hell knows, never seen a turn around like that from a team. Holtby I’ve always thought was overrated a touch.

Absolutely an entirely reasonable position.

If someone put a gun to my head, and I was convinced it was loaded, and made me come up with what I think is a fair trade, I would say Gibson and Rakell for Makar, Grubauer and Colorado's 2020 first. But I don't want to spend any more time on it because neither team is trading those principals.

in what multiverse does this exist that Goalie trades fetch young Top line players or Top Pairing Dmen?

Sorry but goalies never hold that much value in Trades, even Gibson. That market does not exist and there is no trade comparable.
If the ducks moved Gibson, the reason is bc they are blowing it up....getting top end talent back is useless, bc ducks will just be doing the same with them that stye are with Gibson now...wasting their time and career while a team rebuild back up.

Reality is if, and the ducks would be dumb to do it, if they did trade him. They are getting a large multi future heavy trade return, not for established young stars

They sure should for that return

AVs sure are giving up a lot there
Byram + Grubauer might be enough to get it done

if ur not contending there is some logic to trading a key piece. no point of wasting his prime years if the team isn't good

Gibson will never, at any point, be worth as much as Rantanen or Makar. To stay that you need two of them to get Gibson is absolutely ridiculous.
