Gents.

Just for a revenue point of view....is the threat or the reality of the coronavirus going to affect the pro teams.?
Are fans going to stay away from arenas/stadiums? Will fans not make trips to other cities? If recessionary, will fans not have the discretionary income to spend money attending sports events and related pro sports products
The Canadian dollar has gone lower due to lower oil prices, which is continue will affect the NHL total revenues.
There big worldwide ramifications if the virus turns into a true world wide health issue long term. Just saying pro sports might be really affected too.

The Florida Panthers can ignore the empty arena thing ... it won't change anything for them. They're used to it already.

I guess the few fans that do attend the games.....fans from the North East who attend games on vacation, will maybe that group doesn't attend the games. If nothing else, maybe TV ratings are higher as folks are "stuck inside".

I dont see the major issue with coronavirus. More of a media product than a real health issue. RIGHT NOW the only real people that are dying are the old and the sick. The CDC said that most people wont even realize they have it as symptoms just wont show up.

Exactly. The media is in the business of turning every problem into a catastrophe. Could we get to the point where fans stay away from arenas? Absolutely. Attendance could suffer a bit, but the tv ratings will just go up b/c people are tired of watching the news all the time. But we're way far away from that point right now.

Television broadcasters will be pissed if they cancel the games without a clear-cut justification, so we'll be seeing a number of empty arena games.

There is a fear that the NHL could suspend operations. Serie A in Italy just did so, and UEFA is considering suspending their tournaments as well, which are much bigger than the NHL.

That's what makes it an issue; you could still have it and spread it without knowing. Even if it doesn't affect an average healthy person, they can still catch it and spread it to those that can die from it.

I agree, it's probably not as much of a catastrophe as some seem to think it is, but it is still something that everyone needs to stay cautious and vigilant about.

you said we are far from that right now. its legit happening. Sharks are a definite since that area is starting to see more cases of it. but one could assume, ducks, kings, any team thats in a city thats starting to get a large influx of it.

Leagues in Europe are shutting down in Europe due to the Coronavirus. At least DEL (Germany) and EBEL (Austria) are done for the year.

Sad for Stutzle and other prospect trying to prove themselves as the draft gets near...would imagine this will affect the forthcoming draft.

Wouldn't be surprised if other leagues join in.

Last time the Stanley Cup wasn't awarded because of a disease, the two finalists were engraved on the cup above a note that said the series was not completed.

By this standard, everyone except Detroit should be engraved on the cup since everyone is technically still in the running for the cup lol.

Even if the average person won't get sick and die from coronavirus, it has to be looked at as a problem for large organizations dealing with large amounts of people. It's better to be safe than sorry with this from a humane perspective. While it'll definitely hurt financially to whatever extent, the problem will ultimately be resolved.

The NBA had suspended their season.

The NHL will probably follow suit.

This is ridiculous ... I understand why they're doing it, but it's still one of the weirdest few weeks in a while in the whole world.

Forget the NHL season. NHL might season "suspended" because of the fear of so many gathering in an arena. How about every day life in big cities?. Are people going to avoid going to work because they can't/won't travel by subway, or be in elevators with others? If a true pandemic are we witnessing a true world wide economic meltdown?

The one good thing is that, while it may need to be suspended for over a week, the NHL has an extra week ... last year, the playoffs began on April 10th and the Entry draft was on June 21st. This year, the entry draft will be on June 26th, but instead of the playoffs beginning April 15th, they're beginning April 8th. So, if the NHL gets moved back by a week, they get to start the playoffs on the 15th and continue from there as normal.

I think the first step the NHL will take (today) is to play games in empty arenas. They may decide to have every team play to the same number of games and then stop.
