How NJ Might Approach the Expansion Draft in 2021

Created by: Quantum1023

Initial Creation Date: Mar. 9, 2020

Description
Important rules in the expansion draft:
Each team must leave at least two forwards and one defenseman that played in at least 40 games in the prior NHL season exposed. Each team must also have at least one goalie exposed; there are no requirements for how many games the goalie has played in the prior season, but they must be signed through 2021/2022

"All first- and second-year NHL players, and all unsigned draft choices, will be exempt from selection (and will not be counted toward protection limits." So...I think this means Hughes, Kuokkanen, Boqvist, Merkley, Smith, and Blackwood are all protected from Seattle.

Assuming Palms and Gusev are extended before the expansion draft:

Protect seven forwards three defensemen and one goaltender
Forwards: Bratt, Hischier, Palmieri, Gusev, Zacha, Wood, Anderson
Defensemen: Severson, Butcher, Dillon
Goalies: Lehner

Exposed: Subban, Braun, Schnieder, and we need to leave two more forwards exposed somehow? Maybe Mcleod plays 40 NHL games next season so that he's expansion draft-eligible? Maybe we leave Anderson exposed?

i thought the expansion draft was next year. wouldn't carrick be a free agent by then? i also don't think they would hang on to schneider in order to expose him and pay robin lehner.

Ah yes, you're right about Carrick, that's my mistake. I do doubt NJ is going into this off-season without looking to acquire a goalie—if they roll out in October with Schneider and Blackwood once again, and the goaltending isn't good enough, then heads will roll in this organization for making the same mistake twice. If there wasn't an expansion draft in 2021, I think the Devils would probably buy-out Schneider. However, since they need to leave a goalie exposed, it may be prudent to prolong the buy-out until after Seattle makes their selections. Lehner is probably the best shot at helping this team become competitive in 2020-2021 so I think the Devils do everything they can to sign him to the team with some term.

He won't be there for the draft, we need to move him this summer so we have a 22 man roster for the 2020-2021 season

Probably easier to just buy out Schneider in the first buy out window, since they can just have any AHL goalie that’s eligible to be exposed. Then they’re not dealing with cap space issues during free agency.

I don't think the Devils are going to pay Lehner the 6-8 Million to be a back up. There are a lot of teams in on him where he can be the full time starter. Blackwood is going to make 5.5 or higher after the season he is having.

Pretty sure they don’t have to protect Hughes. The Avs have to protect Makar because he played in the playoffs last year otherwise they wouldn’t have had to.

There's a big gap between "looking for a goalie" and "paying Robin Lehner". I think as far as NJ goes, Blackwood is their starter and they'll have to come to terms with him as an RFA. It's possible Schneider could be a buyout candidate either way. I was just expressing doubt that they would pay Blackwood starter money, pay Robin Lehner the market rate, and hold onto Corey Schneider at 6m. That's probably 15m+ in the goaltender position. I think the biggest decision on a Schneider buyout depends on how much real world money they want to pay Cory and how long they want the dead cap hit on their books. If they buy him out this off-season, they owe him 8m real world and it's a 4 year hit. If they wait another year, it's 10m and 2 years.

Merkley, Kuokkanen and Blackwood all need protection in the expansion draft.
