Basically 10% of your cap is being spent on players not playing for the team according to this ACGM. Oof.

Sheahan is on the #1 PK unit not a chance he comes out of the lineup

Bear is easily our top RD not a 3rd pairing guy

McDavid's LW has been a roulette no idea who plays there but likely somebody with more speed the Neal have many options with Ennis, AA, Nygard or RNH (if they split the 2nd line again)

- Sheahan is for sure in the lineup, great pk-er.
- Bear is playing top 4 minutes. Klef-Larsson seems to be steady, and Bear makes Nurse look a lot better. With Klef, Bear and Jones on different pairings, you have good puck movers on each line.
- Really tough on where to play Neal. He is most effective when playing with 97, but also isn't gonna produce line Ennis might. Kassian gives that line size down low, where as a player like Ennis can add speed and skill. The problem is that once you put Neal on line 3 or 4, his effectiveness is really really limited
- AA is an intersting one. I'd like to give him an extended look with 97, but if he keeps struggling with handling the puck at speed, he's doing more harm than good. Playing him at 3C is interesting, epecially since Sheahan/Haas/Khaira shouldn't be playing higher than 4C. Only thing is AA as of now doesn't look sound defesively and your 3C ideally is better in the d-zone.

When healthy, I would probably run:

Ennis-McDavid-Kassian
Nuge-Drai-Yamamoto
AA-Sheahan-Archibald
Neal-Haas-Chaisson
*wth AA, Ennis and Neal all being interchangeable

Klefbom-Larsson
Nurse-Bear
Jones-Green
*Benning and Russell rotating with Green, depending on how he plays after his injury.

No chance Neal plays on the 1st line. He's been with Khaira and Chiasson recently and they've been doing okay: 3-0 in the past 3 games. Ennis or AA will be playing 1LW, the other will be 3LW with Sheahan and Archibald... Draisaitl is the 2C, Nuge plays LW... Nurse-Bear is the top pairing... Jones-Larsson did well as the 2nd pairing while Klefbom was out, I could see them as the 3rd pairing if Green develops chemistry with Klefbom, otherwise it'll be Klefbom-Larsson 2nd pair with Jones-Green 3rd pair most likely... I still have my doubts that Green will supplant Benning as the 3RD though... I have no idea how Nygard fits into the picture, he probably deserves a roster spot but I bet he'll have to wait for an injury opening (when he gets healthy).

Holland was never going to avoid being handicapped during his first couple of years with Edmonton. The team he inherited had fundamental flaws, and had poorly managed its assets. Hence the changes he brought in the past year have not resulted in an ideal roster, just a much better one compared to the previous season.

The roster listed above simply demonstrates the depth that Holland has accumulated, and it is probably the best way he could have prepared his team for a potential play off appearance. There are still questions and gaps, but it is not reasonable to expect that all would be fixed by now, and we have to realize that today's roster will not be in place next October.

There are sure to be fewer NHL contracts sitting in Bakersfield. Manning, Granlund, Jurco, are all gone, as will be Gagner's 10%, and Gryba's $300k. I would not be surprised to see Benning moved this summer, and there is going to have to be at least a couple of current bottom six players moved out as well.

Today's roster is meant to support the core gaining play off experince. A second, or third round appearance is gravy.
