Created by: datools
Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 12, 2020
Published: Mar. 12, 2020

Description
The hypothetical reason Toronto/SJS don't make that deal themselves would be that SJS is more interested in the Pens package than Marner (all hypothetical)

Easy no from Leafs. If Pens want Marner then its Guentzel, Marino + some piece.

I’m not a Pens fan and I can tell you that’s not happening.

Honestly the package you traded for Karlsson but have better value for Marner than Karlsson himself, but yeah anything getting Marner would have to atleast involve Guentzel otherwise it takes a little bit of wind out of their "win now" sail

Probably not, but there is very little interest in moving Marner so the ask would be stupid high, Leafs have no use for EK at his term and price tag

I mean.. price would be big for him and lesser replacement and top-4 D is the minimum he should get back tbh.

Well considering Karlsson is on pace for almost 60 pts (even though he has to split 1st line and PP time with Burns) and can play 30 mins a night, I think he's still very much elite.
Granted Pens might have to sweeten the pot on the deal Karlsson + for Marner, I don't think Karlsson + Guentzel is a reasonable ask at all.

Yeah but Karlsson isn't just top 4 D, he's arguably top 10 D overall, without injured games his pace puts him at #8 in the league for points.
However his injury history is a big question mark for sure

Not really the type of Dman Toronto is looking for though. Barrie is having a really rough go. Net season running

Muzzin-Karlsson
Rielly-Holl
Sandin-liljegren

Wouldn’t be horrible. But I would be looking for 2way guy like jones or Ellis coming back in a marner Trade.

You're right, I could see Rielly really being the offense guy if you gave him a 2 way guy. Not married to Karlsson, obviously I'm a Pens fan so doing this for Pens' reasons. Could totally switch to sending a smaller package to NSH or CBJ and then taking Jones or Ellis and sweetening the deal to Toronto for Marner

I don't think I'd do Guentzel for Marner straight up. Goals are worth more than assists, and Guentzel is One of the best young goalscorers in the league. Plus he on a ridiculous value contract.

Stand alone, Marner is a better player than Guentzel. However with the context of their contracts, that impacts value for sure.
Hard to tell what their stats would look like if they switched teams you know?

I agree, Well besides straight up being unfair. But I just don’t see guentzal as a great fit in return either. Leafs have a ton of forwards with goal scoring touch. Need more possession/playmakers if marner is moved... which begs the question... why move him. He kills penalties, has a solid 200 Foot game and tees up our snipers.

With how loaded they are up front, I think they need to trade for D, that kind of looks like what they've been missing for 2 years.
However they could chose to move Nylander instead? I assume both Matthews and Tavares are untouchable and I don't think the other forwards could fetch an Elite RHD

Defence is 18 guys, not 6... the other 2 guys need to pitch in a little better as well. Which they have been doing over the last stretch.

Leafs will have the cap space and trade capital to upgrade a Dman on the right side next season without moving any core players. That is really all that is needed.

If the cap doesn't go up much due to virus it looks really tight no?

I mean without diving into CORSI basic stats for the lesser replacement

JG
39gp 20g 23a 43p (1.10ppg) (.51gpg)

MM
59gp 16g 51a 67p (1.13ppg) (.27gpg)

I’d say Guentzel and Marner are very close in skill. So for Pittsburgh to add a high end top 4 RHD to this equation would be a terrible idea. I’d actually give Guentzel the edge since Marner at best will have 20-25 goals. We can dip into the “advance stats” I’m not a huge fan but if I had to we could.

Oh yeah. Guentzel also isn’t ridiculously overpaid forgot about that part

Difference for me is Marner is 3 years younger so even more room to grow and who knows what Marner would be like playing with Sid and what Guentzel would be like playing with Tavares

Big thing here for me is Guentzel is a proven talent in the playoffs and is putting up similar numbers to marner for about half the price. Assuming th cap stays flat Guentzel is worth 3x marner bc of his cheap contact or $/point production. Teams need cap space and production. Marner might be young and slightly better but him being a top 5 paid players makes his contract ugly currently

You bet, I'm a way bigger Guentzel fan than Marner. I'd never send out Jake to get Mitch. But 1v1, who is better at age 26, I might lean Marner... (obviously no context or contract accounted for)

Karlsson is several levels ahead of Barrie. He is older & has had health issues but he’s still an elite defender. Would probably make sense for Pesce / Manson / Doughty instead.
