Description
The hypothetical reason Toronto/SJS don't make that deal themselves would be that SJS is more interested in the Pens package than Marner (all hypothetical)

Karlsson is several levels ahead of Barrie. He is older & has had health issues but he’s still an elite defender. Would probably make sense for Pesce / Manson / Doughty instead.

Karlsson and Barrie are similar defensively was my point. Although I would still give the edge to Karlsson there as well

Easy no from Leafs. If Pens want Marner then its Guentzel, Marino + some piece.

Honestly the package you traded for Karlsson but have better value for Marner than Karlsson himself, but yeah anything getting Marner would have to atleast involve Guentzel otherwise it takes a little bit of wind out of their "win now" sail

Quoting: Boomer125
Probably not, but there is very little interest in moving Marner so the ask would be stupid high, Leafs have no use for EK at his term and price tag

Jesus Murphy... Where's the "dislike" button?

I don't think I'd do Guentzel for Marner straight up. Goals are worth more than assists, and Guentzel is One of the best young goalscorers in the league. Plus he on a ridiculous value contract.

Quoting: Capitalfail67
Big thing here for me is Guentzel is a proven talent in the playoffs and is putting up similar numbers to marner for about half the price. Assuming th cap stays flat Guentzel is worth 3x marner bc of his cheap contact or $/point production. Teams need cap space and production. Marner might be young and slightly better but him being a top 5 paid players makes his contract ugly currently

Marner & Guentzel are pretty much on the exact same level performance wise. Maybe Jake has a slight edge cuz of his playoff dominance, but still. However, Jake has way higher value than Marner. It’s not even close. If I’m Pens GM, I would demand Marner, Sandin & Robertson for Guentzel.

You bet, I'm a way bigger Guentzel fan than Marner. I'd never send out Jake to get Mitch. But 1v1, who is better at age 26, I might lean Marner... (obviously no context or contract accounted for)

Yeah if cap meant nothing and I was going strictly off skill and potential I would probably take marner. Guentzel is a great 5v5 goal guy it honestly would be tough.... slight edge towards Marner. Guentzel gets eclipsed by Crosby and Malkin but he’s a great fit

Maybe this season they are similar, but I can’t imagine career wise.

Karlsson is on a decline and isn't worth that contract.

Say what you will about the Marner deal, but paying him that money is a better use of the money than paying Karlsson.

Guentzel has what it takes to play with any elite center. His high hockey sense & work off the puck makes him really versatile in which he can adapt to the playing style of different players. Marner is only good playing alongside centers like Kadri & Tavares, who aren’t the greatest skaters & have to work to generate space & make plays. Though Crosby is a tremendous skater, he also has high hockey sense & work off the puck therefore I think Marner could still fit with him.

I mean, Karlsson is trending downwards, but he’s proven he’s the best defenseman in the game with multiple Norris trophies (should’ve won in 2016 & 2017 as well). He well earned that contract.

That's cool. I hope he enjoys playing in San Jose. I don't want him on Toronto for that much.

Which is exactly why all agreed the deal would never happen. As for your value assessment sit down your a fool with nothing meaningful to say regarding Mitch Marner

Yeah like I said before it would be close. When you look at skill then factor in contracts Guentzel is worth 3x marner

I think Mitch Marner would be worth something like this: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/315025&post_id=1332474

Not at 22 years old, Leafs would regret that trade for years and live that down, I get he's overpaid at this point - every fan said the same about Nylander , move him he's overpaid, Marner will be just fine - moving him for a Big and that's all Zadorov is is big 3rd pair LHD and 2 sure to be 25-31 OA picks is a fireable never working at that level again move

I agree, need to trade Marner who is elite RW for an Elite RHD, or else why would you trade him at all

I’d assume marner value would be higher. IMO it’s impossible for TML to get a fair market value for him only bc his dollar amount today looks so high. In 4-5 years his talent will match his $$ amount. They would need to trade him for a player his age making his type of money. Let’s say Provorov but with a 9 million dollar contract type

Yes that is true. Honestly, I don’t think Marner has played anywhere near his best this season, his decision making has just been catastrophic. It seems like he has no confidence. At his best, he’s probably a 9 million dollar player but this season he has played like a guy who’s worth 2-3 million. So that’s why I don’t have him particularly.

I hope you’re right man. It’s just, last season when Nylander as struggling & not putting up points, the team was still winning games so his contract never affected the team. This year, Marner hasn’t played the greatest, but he’s still put up a ton of points yet the Leafs are having a much tougher season. So the contract really does burden the team as it doesn’t give them much flexibility to get additional help. That’s why I think he’s gotta be dealt.

Sure, but get help then, Zadorov isn't the answer

Zadorov is a big physical shutdown defenseman who can play on both sides & can play big minutes.
