What do we think? I think you get about the same middling/disappointing results.

All offense, no team defense, a very young 3rd pairing and overall poor defense. around 3rd in the league in scoring and around 3rd last in giving up goals...yeah, about the same result.

I'd say you payed both Dermott and Malgin too much, honestly I get hopes and dreams about Liljegren being NHL ready for third pair out of the brain, maybe see if you can swap him for Cernak out of Tampa

I say cap is going to be around 84M no way will it be 86.5 because of coronavirus. heck, it actually might even go down.

I think that in your scenario....

Mikheyev is slightly low money wise.
Malgin is a depth forward at best. NHL minimum IMO.
Wayyyyy too much for Dermott in both AAV and term. We still don't know if this guy is anything more than a bottom pair D.
Spezza for sure if ye wants to be in TO.

That right side D is absolute trash as it is here. The Leafs need a top pairing RHD more than anything else. (Possibly even two RHD). They need to fix that.

I would be shocked if the cap goes up that high TBH. I'm expecting closer to the projected floor of 84 million as an increase if anything at all.

Just my 2 cents.

Leafs defence has been great. Having everyone buy into team defence and play it game in and game out is a different story. Goaltending was certainly an issue for the first half of the season as well.

That Dermott contract though... ouch. I would not shell out nearly that much.

First half of the season? The stats don't lie, this team is built and playing to win games 5-4 or 5-3 or lose by the same amount, if you think the same cast of characters, and two rookie dmen and a year older Anderson gets better at defence, I think you're mistaken. In fact, I think that's one of the worst group of forwards defensively in the league. Holl as a 1st pairing guy?

The question was: what do we think? I think its more of the same non-physical, middling results.

Andersson is miles ahead of Dermott. Believe me, flames are my second team as I live here in Calgary. From a quick snapshot they seem similar but their roles are far different. Also keep in mind that Calgary is betting on andersson. Much safer bet than Dermott at that.

That's a fair comparable if your going 6 years, I wouldn't be going 6 years with Dermott strictly because of the Muzzin signing, hoping for a 2-3 year bridge deal or he's moved for an actual RHD in the same ball park of development as Dermott

It was never going to be $86m to begin with. Escrow. People put way too much stock in what Daly said when the NHLPA has made it clear they're not interested in making the escrow problem worse.
