launch blashill straight to the sun

Created by: Angry_Canucklehead
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 2, 2020
Published: Mar. 12, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This would be turning the worst team of the century into a fringe playoff contender by accelerating the rebuild.
There's still a lot of cap space, draft picks and young core players - they're set to do well and are an up-and-coming team, not a 40-point AHL caliber team with a bunch of goofs.
Goaltending is very poor but can it even get any worse than it is right now? A Scott Foster-David Ayres duo would do way better than Bernier (who's actually started to play very very very well) and Jimmy Howard who can't stop a beach ball.

Trades
1.
DET
  1. Lucic, Milan
  2. 2020 1st round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Wings absorb a nasty contract
CGY
  1. Bernier, Jonathan ($1,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Flames add an underrated (but not great) goalie at a cheap cap hit and clear out a bunch of cap space. It's not cheap but it never is to get rid of a contract like that
2.
DET
  1. Niemeläinen, Markus [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
Niemelainen isn't special, he's a future top 6 defenceman at best. Huge and physical.
EDM
  1. Helm, Darren ($1,925,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Helm is a great penalty killer with a lot of speed. Too bad he has bricks for hands. Very useful in a contender's bottom six though and could be alright with McDavid as he can keep up.
3.
DET
  1. Hertl, Tomas
Additional Details:
Hertl would give the Red Wings another very good - not elite, but very good - skill player for their top six. Hertl can play center or wing too which helps. He's near the same age as Mantha and Bertuzzi as well and will get the Wings a lot closer to winning
SJS
  1. Cholowski, Dennis
  2. Hirose, Taro [RFA Rights]
  3. 2020 1st round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
I think San Jose would need to move Hertl in order to actually rebuild which is what they need to do at this point. Hertl is one of their most valuable pieces and in this case they get two prospects with good upside as well as a first round pick.
4.
DET
  1. 2021 2nd round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Detroit frees up a roster spot for a young guy, probably Svechnikov
TOR
  1. Filppula, Valtteri ($1,500,000 retained)
  2. 2021 3rd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Filppula does have value in a bottom six as he can kill penalties and brings a good veteran and defensive presence with a Cup to his name. Eating salary would be a must in a Filppula trade

I don't think you're as close as you think you are on all of these trades.

Kind of sugar coating it. With those moves I'm not sure he should even be allowed to watch the Wings.

Hertl is the piece the sharks should be rebuilding around, not trading away, especially for that bad of a haul.

No one wants to watch the Wings this year. Having done so myself almost 70 times this year (NHL Center Ice blackouts, you know) I can tell you that a good bourbon helps ease the pain.

Yep fully agree. Don't understand why fans quickly jump to firing the coach as the quick fix too. This team is just awful! It's not Blashill's fault. He is a well respected coach among the players in the dressing room plus he has good experience winning with our young core in the AHL. Please tell me what is so bad about Blashill. I know he shuffles lines a lot but other than that what?!?
