Red Wings Rising

Created by: Cons1721
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 15, 2020
Published: Mar. 15, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
After firing Blashill, my top priority would be to find a solid goalie in free agency to help Bernier out. Someone a little younger like Markstrom would make sense. Next, I would pick up a decent veteran defenseman like Gudas at a reasonable price. Guys like Krug and Pietrangelo are tempting, but I think the cost would be too high for a non-competitor. Hopefully Seider is NHL ready next year, and Cholowski can get it together. We have a lot of young talent at forward, so I probably wouldn’t make any major moves there, except maybe a good center if there’s one available via trade/free agency. Valeno and our top 4 pick might be ready to go at the opener. Abdelkader/Nielsen buyouts might happen, but I doubt we’d need the cap room this year. Just ride out the bad contracts for now. Let me know what you think!

Veleno can probably secure that spot by the 21-22 season.

Maybe but if I was Wings management I'd be concerned about wasting another season, really feel like they need to start pulling out of this rebuild.

I disagree. Even if they acquired a 2C , they are still a lottery team. They will likely get another top 8 pick and by the 21-22 season, they’ll be competitve. They need Seider to develop into a top pairing Dman.

Lafreniere - Larkin - mantha
Bertuzzi - Veleno - Zadina

I think if they fill the 2C spot, spend some of their cap space filling the holes on D and in goal they could be better, mostly thinking that's if they get Lafreniere though.

Yeah but there’s no point in accelerating the rebuild for a 1st rd exit. They need to build around Larkin, Seider , and lafreniere.

the only move I make in free agency is attempt to sign krug. Detroit can’t afford to give up assets in a trade

I get what you're saying just feel like they can't be brutal again next season.
Check out the Wings ACGM I made today, you're gonna hate it and tear into it but I'm prepared for your criticism... 😃😅😂

That 2nd center is a giant problem. I'm not sold on velano as a long term fix really. I'd love to try and pry a guy off a cap strapped team

Those Markstrom numbers are very likely in Vancouver's wheel-house. Think the $ is what Canucks would be able to pay and likely they are in the 4-5yr term bracket too?

Yes they do. Unfortunately there are no UFAs this year to sign this year at the 2C spot and they can't give up assets to get one.

Sure they can, they could make a move for Domi.

I don't agree they can't try to get someone. They have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds this year and 5 next year. You can still make moves and draft young guys.

The only way I see them getting a top 2 C is if they get a bad contract with it which I wouldn't mind, but I can't work out a trade in my mind where that works.

I agree, I think Vancouver easily matches those number. Signing Markstrom is not out of the realm of possibilities and trying to sign him is a good idea but I think that it will have to be something like 5 x $6M or $6.5M

I'd be very cautious in allocating that kinda dough$$ to 30yr old-late bloomer/career .912 Sv %-age Markstrom! DET has the ability during the re-build but if VAN pay that much they are insane.
* Canucks have a lot of expensive bottom-6 deadwood pieces, expansion is looming and they are up against IT (Cap) and it's not going to sky-rocket upward due to COVID. Moreover, they have these two new core pieces to sign next year likely taking about US$20Mil collectively in EP40/Hughie!!

I know I've been trying to find one. The closest is probably Strome in NY. They need cash so maybe taking smith or Staal. I'm not sold on him as a long term fix though. I wouldn't mind bonino short term and he'd be a good vet for the kids
