Getting a RHD For Chabot

Created by: Claesson4Norris
Team: 2019-20 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 21, 2020
Published: Mar. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sens have a huge surplus of prospects and picks, that they can't possibly hope to integrate all these players into the NHL, or even the AHL. they should look at using that surplus of assets to try and add a young RHD who could be a long term partner for Chabot.

UNTOUCHABLES:
Chabot
Tkachuk
Batherson
Norris
Brannstrom
Bernard-Docker
Formenton (there is a scenario where he's on the table)
2020 1st (OTT)
2020 1st (SJS)
Any future 1st round picks (no chance Ottawa should be dealing their own 1st ever again)

These are just a few names I think could be a fit, but if there are any other options let me know.

Not sure if any of these guys would be available.

Probably not. Sens are in a position where they could make overpay offers and not really worry about it. Just keep adding 2nd round picks until they accept

Also depending on contract situations Cernak could have to be moved.

Sens have the NYI 1st that I would be willing to trade, and I think with Ottawa likely getting a centre in the top 5, they could probably part with Logan Brown.

I wouldn't take Drysdale in the top 5.

How about doing the right thing and drafting one with the NYI 1st... Schneider should be there around that pick as well as other RHD.

I think adding a young guy who you know for sure can play 20 minutes would be a bold move that would accelerate the future of this team.

There are RD options in the NY 1st range that could be good pickups (Schneider, Barron or Grans) but none of them seem like clear cut options to be top pair material, and they're all several years away at least.

You could also overpay Pietranglo and have him as your RHD for the next 7 years... there’s also Barrie, Hamonic and a few others who could be top 4 RHD in free agency. I think trading Ottawa’s picks and prospects is the last thing they should do. They can also draft one of the RHD with the NYI first and get an older D for a few years and replace him after a few years with the guy you just drafted. Ottawa is still a few years from being a really competitive team.

Adding a 30 year old FA is different than adding a 23-25 year old. Sens would be a getting cost controlled assets who fit in age wise with the current rebuild.

As I said, the free agent is also FREE... you have to pay for the other players... plus a solid vet could also help the rebuild in the locker room. Just a bunch of young players isn’t always good, it can hurt a team. Look at Edmonton, they were a cluster for a while before adding a veteran leadership when they brought in Lucic and Russel with McDavid. Adding a Pietranglo would be Hugh for Ottawa’s leadership and how they can help build the young core.
