Buying out Russell out of all the options is extremely shortsighted and dumb. Koskinen, neal or kassian should be way ahead of Russell, hes only got one year left and there are teams who will take on his contract an extremely low price

I wonder how a Lucic compliance buyout would work with our retained portion. Might free up another 750k for Edmonton

If the compliance buy-out actually came to be, and if Calgary exercised the option with Lucic, the Oilers would be on the hook for 12.5%. With the season seemingly being over, the Oiler 3rd round pick is no longer in play, and if the Oilers bought out Neal the whole deal still appears to favour Edmonton.

Neal is the clear winner for the buyout. Kassian might be slightly overpaid but can play from 1st to 4th line and adapt to different playstyles. Same goes with Koskinen was good almost all year with a reduced workload would have been better at 3x3.5 contract but still rather have his contract over Neals

Neal's contract is extremely easy to buy out right now. If they were to use their compliance buyout on kassian and just outright buyout neal they would save a whole lot more then just using their compliance buyout on neal. Especially when kassians production is so replaceable

I just made a post about how you would save a ton more cap space if you were to use their compliance buyout on kassian and just buyout neal when his contract is so front loaded

Other way around is actually better cap wise but can you find a McD winger that has chemistry, speed, physical play and can protect McD if needed for 1.6M saved from Kassian buyout

For me Kassian brings other very valuable attributes to the team than just his statistics. Not a buyout in my books.

You can go out on july 1st and find 15 guys who can do just as well with McDavid who would cost under 900k. Tyler ennis signed with ottawa for way less and it benefited him a ton. McDavid doesn't need protection, the league isnt like that anymore

Russell has just one year left on his deal, one that pays him just $1.5M next year. He won't be difficult to move, even if they have to retain.

Kassian scored 15 goals in 59 games, a 21 goal pace. All at 5v5. That's more than Tavares scored this year. You Leafs fans think Kapanen is a god, but he only scored 10 despite playing 69 games - 10 more than Kassian. Only a complete idiot would talk buyout.

Of the 30 goalies that played 35+ games this year, Koskinen ranked 6th in save percentage. His contract is $4.5M for 2 more years; he's just 31 so he should have no problem covering the bet.

LOL sorry Jack, that is incorrect. McDavid as well as Matthews, Johnny hockey ect are continually getting hacked/held/roughed up. Oilers are one of the least PP teams in the league. and than wait until playoffs. Hockey is still hard and old school especially in the first round

That's what I was saying about Russell, he'd be the easiest to move.

I hope you're joking about kassian, hes a 4th liner who lucked his way on to McDavids wing. Without McDavid hes a 4th liner and paying him anymore then 1 million is a huge waste. There are far better options who make way less then him. Hes on a horrible contract. Kapanen has been put in a terrible position for most the season but when hes in the spot he should be he is a far better player then kassian without a doubt. Kapanen could easily be a 65 point winger with McDavid and he would still make the same amount as kassian

The leafs by far have the fewest powerplays in the league and it is due to the makeup call. If kassian is protecting McDavid then how come hes getting hooked and slashed so much. You can turn on any Oilers game and see that McDavid should draw at least a penalty or two each shift, kassian isnt stopping players from doing these things. It's the Refs job

Yes we will see if the playoffs ever come back how valuable he is. He is exactly the kind of player Toronto needs against the Bruins. But yes he does his job. Watch an Oilers game sometime and see what he does. Toronto and Edmonton are 5 PP's apart. Islanders are the fewest. Oilers are 23 and Leafs are 25.
