80M Cap with 1 Compliance Buyout

Created by: Canucks33
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 17, 2020
Published: Mar. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Originally for this offseason I wanted to move Baertschi and Sutter, but it's going to be tough to make deals with quite a few teams scrambling for cap space. I would prefer not to buy out Baertschi even though that's what I expect to happen. Maybe retaining 50% on Sutter would get some attention.

Markstrome is getting more than that especially when we have seen Demko is not ready yet

I do wonder, given what has transpired if the league will do this if the cap remains flat. Since they told everyone that it was going up and then the league had to suddenly shut down, I think giving teams a compliance buyout would help every team since they are all losing money right now.

instead of a buyout my idea would be make one salary not count towards the cap so u can keep said player but his salary does not count on your cap till the year after.

If the buy-out is announced, I bet the paperwork on this particular transaction hits the NHL office no later than 12:02 a.m.

If you want to move Baer, would a 1 for 1 with Bjugstad from PIT work? Jugs is the better player, they're both frequently hurt, but Baer makes around a mil less

I could see an exception, but would you make it any player, thus giving say Edmonton the ability to not count McDavid’s salary? That would seem to give teams with a big ticket guy a bigger advantage if even for a year.

i would make the limit at 8 million so for instance toronto would make nylanders salary the exception against the cap

Good idea in theory and do such as: take the highest contract from each of the teams, add them all up, and divde by 31 = each team can use that calculated amount as a one-time/one year BONUS to Spend$$?
The owners will get money back real quik from new hyper-inflated prices for tickets, beer, dogs, parking, arena air and merch....

I had him locked in at 6 million too but with the cap likely going down I think there will be quite a few free agents who are forced to take less than they would normally get.

In theory it makes sense, but Vancouver needs to shed as much salary as possible right now. I don't think we have the roster or cap room for someone like Bjugstad unless you want to take someone like Sutter back.

I could be wrong, but don't you guys but really have to pay anyone next year, it's the year after that EP is up, and by that time Jugs' contract will have expired...? (Also hard hard no to the Sutter option lol)

We have about 1.7M in performance bonuses carrying over from Pettersson and Hughes and we have to bring back/replace Markstrom and Tanev's spots. That should cost around 10M-12M and then our RFAs would eat up the rest (Virtanen, Gaudette, etc.). It would also be smart to keep some cap room to prevent Pettersson and Hughes' bonuses from carrying over again when we have to re-sign them.

Bjugstad isn't enough of an upgrade to justify the additional cap complications.
