Potential 3 way trade - ANA - TBL

Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 21, 2020
Published: Mar. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Each team gets a guy who fits their situations pretty good. Cap hits are important here.

Tampa gets a guy on an ELC who can play next year.

Leafs get a guy who brings what they need - Plays top competition and is good at shutting them down. Could partner well with Rielly. With retention, he will come in cheaper than what Cernak would.

Ducks get a young guy to replace Manson. Similar type of player with potential to be better. Fits their age group well. They retain on Manson, but this doesn't affect them all that much.

I know I didn't fill out the lineup. This is just about this trade.

If the Ducks are eating half of Manson they're getting more than Cernak, and Leafs should just keep him if they get him

So would I, but I think his cap hit would likely be a little too restraining.

Not much. If they get more, you're talking like a 4th or a meh prospect.

Ducks could also roll the Dice with an offersheet at 4M a year for Cernak since with the retention they're effectively paying him 5.7 for 2/3 years and only pay a second and move Manson for something else

Cernak is having a good year with tampa but I worry he comes to toronto and becomes tyson barrie sure Barrie got better but overall kind of dissapointing. However that said Toronto will do anything to boost that dcore for a chance to push into the playoffs

Sure they could. If I were them, that's what I would do. Offer sheets are rare though, so I don't see it happening. You never know though. And besides, with the situation Anaheim is in, cap space isn't a huge concern for them.

For sure, I doubt any team makes an offersheet this year but I would if I'm Bob Murray. True, but that doesn't mean they retain for the fun of it, Cap space could be the most valuable asset to have if the cap stays flat, and any team would be foolish not to capitalize on it, especially with teams like Tampa and the Leafs

Barrie had a bunch of red flags coming in (PP merch, bad defensively, not better analytically) cernak you know what you're getting, solid defensive play, with a slight offensive touch

Yeah, you're right. I wasn't suggesting that it didn't matter at all, just that the affect on them wouldn't be detrimental. However if they can squeeze an extra asset out for the retention, of course they should. And I really hope that offer sheets do get thrown out there this year. Tampa is ripe for the picking. Someone offer sheets Cernak first for 4m or so... He is probably the worst of Tampa's RFA's, but they have NOBODY on the right side next year. So now they have to choose. Lose one of the better players, or lose from an already weak position? It'll be interesting.

Barrie and Cernak are pretty much polar opposites. I don't think you need to worry about that.

Anaheim isn't retaining on Manson for that, teams don't retain 50% on good/fair value contracts that have term.

Idk if you can really call 2 years 'Term'. Cernak for Manson in a straight up comparison value wise definitely goes to Cernak. The retention balances it out. If a piece is added, it's not a big piece. Also what does good/fair value have to do with it at all?

Tampa has no cap space. Getting a guy who can play on their roster for hardly any money is beneficial to them considering their RFA situation. Why do you think ANA declines?

Tampa will trade Kilhorn, Gourde and Johnson all before a cost efficient Dman whos played great on their top pair.
Anaheim doesnt retain 2 mill for 2 years and not get anything extra back. Manson and Cernak are close to a wash

Those guys all have at least some form of trade protection; Tampa may not be able to move them. Cernak definitely has more value than Manson. The retention for ANA does not have much of an affect on them, they don't have to pay anyone significant over those two years. If anything is added, it wouldn't be a lot.

Cernak is nothing like Barrie. Polar opposite.
