TRADES:

Kyle Palmieri: Want to gather assets in case he leaves as a free agent next year. I think Edmonton would be a good trade partner but I'm not sure the return here. I think Puljujarvi would need to be the centre piece coming back.

Alzner & Eriksson: I think it's going to be a 2 year rebuild where New Jersey is back in the playoffs for the 2022 - 2023 season. It could be a good opportunity for New Jersey to gain assets while taking on some bad contracts that expire by the time they are ready to contend again. Both vets could also help speed up the rebuild with their experience in a younger team. These trades would be dependent on ownership wanting to spend the money for draft picks as the salary cap is high for a team going through a rebuild. Also, not sure on the return here but, since they're 2 year contracts I wouldn't take anything lees then a 2nd + a 3rd.

Team wouldn't have any bad contracts by the time they're ready to push for the playoffs again

SIGNINGS:

Galchenyuk: Might as well take a low risk deal here where 2 things could happen. 1. He is terrible and his contract expires by the end of the season. 2. He ends being a decent player and you can look to re-sign him or flip him at the deadline. Very low risk move not hurting the future.

Depth signings: Not much to say here. Picked up a 2 guys with high upside that could turn into something. If not, no big deal they can just step in when guys get injured.

Long Term: Would look in to buying out Schneider and moving Gusev next season depending on what happens.

Overall, New Jersey could turn this around quickly depending on how fast their developmental system can bring prospects up.

You made 3 trades but none of them make us better - not now and very likely not in the future.

Puljujärvi's value is low right now so you'd be throwing away Palmieri for potentially nothing. I like the idea of taking on bad contracts but there'd have to be more value for the Devils if they decide to do so.

I agree with you on the Pulujarvi part as it is a big risk taking him. I could still see him turning into a top 9 forward at worst though, Maybe it could be him + 1st to make the value even?

However, I think all 3 trades make the team better in the future. Obviously, depending on your trust in New Jerseys scouting and developmental team, the 6 picks acquired could either turn into NHL players or be traded for other assets. If you don't think they have a good developmental system they could target more ready prospects in the trades instead. The goal here was to make the team worse and go for higher draft picks for 2 years and be ready to contend for the 2022-2023 season.

On the trades for bad contracts, you're most likely looking at a first round pick max in return as seen in trades the past few seasons. This goes back to the developmental system where a 2nd, 3rd & 4th > 1st if you trust the R&D team.

We already have enough prospects in our farm with potential anywhere in the bottom half of the lineup (Basically anyone aside from Smith, Foote and maybe Boqvist). Right now we need to fill the other half and get a better supporting cast around Hughes & Hischier. You're not getting those players with 3rd & 4th round selections. Quality over quantity is the way to go right now.

And I'm sure 31 teams would take 1st over a 2nd/3rd and a 4th regardless of their scouting/development staff unless it's like a very low 1st and a very high 2nd.

The Alzner trade is the most likely to be around fair value but in the other 2 the Devils get robbed.

I think taking on Eriksson starts with the value of a 1st minimum: Marleau only had one year left and CAR got a 1st just for buying him out; plus I doubt Eriksson waivers his NTC to got to NJ unless he knows he is getting bought out and can sign wherever he wants.

I have no faith in the Devils Scouting/ Developmental team, Fitzgerald was assitant GM with Shero in PIT, and was the assitant GM for the entire time Shero was GM in NJ and outside of Hischer/ Hughes (1st overall) the only other two players that have lived up to their draft potential have been Blackwood and Bratt.

At this point I think it would be better for the Devils to trade for younger NHL ready players, like you mentioned, rather than waiting 2-4 years waiting on prospects that may/ may not develop.
