Skjei Plus for Ehlers

Created by: Hockyluv21
Team: 2020-21 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 22, 2020
Published: Mar. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The big, urgent need for Skjei is these playoffs. After that, if he performs well with us in the post-season, he could potentially be a valuable trade piece for a forward with term. Vatanen takes a 1 year deal as a bet on the UFA market being less constricted next offseason.

Honestly, the value of the deal depends on how much Skjei elevates his play this postseason. If he craps the bed, then it's not-great value. If he plays more like what he potentially can be with his tools, he should be able to fetch Ehlers in a deal. Young, 25-26 year old defensemen with his tools don't come cheap in the trade market.

The Canes' FO obviously disagrees. Those guys are a lot smarter than we are, and they grade him highly enough to pay a 1st for him.

It is insane the rangers were able to get a 1st for him. He is a replacement level defenseman

I give the canes FO a lot of credit, they’ve made some smart trades over the last few years - Skjei has been a replacement level defenseman this season so I doubt Winnipeg is going to give up a top line winger for him.

I don't agree with the idea that the 1st was an overpayment for Skjei. He has 4 years left on his deal after this season, and he has some fabulous tools, particularly in terms of his speed-to-size ratio. His toolbox obviously haven't caught up to that yet, but you also have to account for the fact that with some exceptions, defensemen don't tend to peak until their mid-to-late 20s (see John Carlson and Dougie Hamilton), as it often tends to be with more mentally-demanding positions. We basically got him and his entire prime years for the cost of only a mid-to-late 1st.

He was amazing offensively when sheltered behind Mcdonagh, hes not bad when hes not asked to do too much

Neither do young (er?) Elite, legitimate top line wingers...

And speaking of "sheltered", look at who Skjei's going to be surrounded and paired with if the Canes' FO decide to keep him.

I don't disagree, LMAO. I'm just saying that if Skjei plays up to potential with us, the value becomes equivalent or near-equivalent to Ehlers.

I don't think that we've seen peak Slavin or peak Pesce yet, much in the same way that we did not see peak Dougie until this past season. It'll be quite the treat to watch how Slavin/Skjei/Pesce, all born in the same birth year of 1994, develop as a team together over the next few years, if they keep all three.
