Compliance Buyout Usage if Staal Waives His NMC for Seattle

Created by: Hockyluv21
Team: 2020-21 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 22, 2020
Published: Mar. 22, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the cap stays flat next year and each team gets one compliance buyout, the Canes can be one of the teams that can take advantage of a compliance buyout that they don't really need. Doug Wilson can essentially receive a get-out-of-jail-free card from us in exchange for giving us Labanc for a reduced asset price, letting them clear out two cap hits instead of one. A true power move for Mr. Dundon and our FO, just like Marleau for a 1st was last year.

Burns is signed too long to old but he hasn't started breaking down yet. He's like a year removed from a Norris nomination.

Make that Vlasic and they're listening.

Do the OTT trade for Mrazek. Reimer won out the minutes over Mrazek this year. He isn't a cap dump

Reimer would be worth more in a trade than Mrazek, at least in terms of the draft pick that they could receive. After July 1st, Reimer only makes $900K in real salary, making him attractive to a cash-poor team like Ottawa who can save $2M in real money by dealing Gaborik and a mid-round pick for Reimer after July 1st. The trade would act as more of a roster clear for Carolina than a cap dump, as Nedeljkovic is NHL-ready.

I'm saying that Carolina's goaltending would be awful otherwise. Why put so much effort into making a team the best it can be just to have goalies that can't stop anything?

Also I just noticed the Fleury and Foegele contracts... I can't see either of them getting long term deals, especially at that much. Foegele has been good, but he is still unproven, and has also been paired with carolina's better players. He is a bridge contract for sure - probably in the 2.75 range at 2 years. Fleury has yet to claim an NHL spot, and though he is better than people make him out to be, I don't see him getting any more money than a 1 in the first digit.

With those contracts adjusted, there would be more room to sign another goalie or make a different roster move.

With the amount of space and flexibility that we'll have this year even if the cap is flat, a good way to leverage this is to extend Foegele and Fleury long-term. It's not necessary, perhaps, but it's IMO highly likely that both of them will out-perform the AAV on their deals, particularly Foegele, so why not do it early instead of bridging them and risking them getting a far richer deal in 2 years?

Forgot that you have Martin Jones and his contract on the team? That's why you do this trade. Get two bad contracts cleared instead of one!

Pointless trade for Ottawa. The don't need a goalie and they need to eat cap space. With Gaborik not able to play his contract is covered by insurance (up to 80% of the salary I think). Decent deal for ol' Screuge, I mean Euge. I wish more people would understand the sens don't need to shed salary for next year

Your not just the only team that is gonna do this. Vegas, Boston leafs and many other teams are gonna do this so don't think its just you. Also Staal isn't going to Seattle

We need forwards badly though, and we cannot replace them all through FA. Id give a pick with Vlasic or jones for you to buy them out though

I know Dundon has a lot of money but keeping Dzingel would be a lot cheaper then spending $42M to buy a 3rd line winger.

As long as the Canes keep winning and keep drawing more fans, Dundon will keep green-lighting that max spending as long as they use up that cap space smartly with talented, skilled players. In this league, when you spend money well, you can make that money back no matter what market that you're in.

Idk man, $42 million is a lot of money to try and make back.. Lol.. not sure Labanc is gonna produce all that much more then Dzingel, doesn't seem worth it imo.

You're using our good goaltender to..... take on a cap dump and a mid round pick? HELL NO, Reimer on his own can get back a 3rd, taking on Gabroik should be WAY more.

It isn't a cap dump Caniac2000, it's simply an LTIR dump. Gaborik is essentially LTIRetired, which is why he's so easy to include without much change in the draft pick compensation.

Melnyk cheaps out all the time, he wants to pay as little as he can, and Gabroik helps that. On the other hand, Dundon wants to spend as much as he can to help the team, this makes no sense in either regard.
