Is it the cap that is bad or has he really been that average?

He’s playing in a shutdown role and he cant handle it. He’s a solid 2nd pairing defenseman (or #2 if he’s playing with a borderline elite LD) but he’s being paid like a #1. Fox is a great two way defenseman and deangelo is better than trouba offensively, so I see no reason why they should hold onto trouba. I feel like they’ll regret not moving him in 2 years when he has a NMC and fox needs a new contract.

this makes a lot of sense. I see a lot of DeAngelo trades, assuming he's the odd man out. Why not Trouba? He's the worst one of the 3

Yeah he has the 3rd worst GAR among defenseman in the NHL , not having the best year.

If he didn’t have a NMC, I’d say keep him and trade him in a few years.

But his NMC doesn't kick in until next season.

First time traded. New teammates. Youngest team. Makeshift year on d with cyclops, Smith and newbies. Sure he's overpaid by 1m but he's been solid. His defensive presence will fit in nicely with the rest of the skilled future d core. Either way he has a mntc the final 4 seasons of contract, which unlocks us IF necessary. Our d is set. Not trading Trouba. Don't need Dillon for 4 yrs. TML not trading Dermott. NYR not trading kravtsov, especially for little Domi.

Rangers should no way trade Trouba... Trouba eats up minutes against the other teams top line and Is able to play with a constant physicality that DeAngelo and Fox don't possess. Trouba's playing a new role this season as shut down defenseman and has improved greatly since the beginning of the season. You could tell he was starting to feel more comfortable and starting to step more often to make a big hit. As he continues to get more comfortable his point production will also start to increase.

He played the shutdown role fine in Winnipeg but his partner was Morrissey usually.

Its not a new role for him, it's what he's been doing in Winnipeg for years, he's really not much of an offensive dman.

What you talking about Willis? When in Winnipeg Trouba was like DeAngelo playing 3rd pair Right-D. Trouba also put up 50 plus points last season playing behind Byfuglien and Myers. Trouba has never played the role of 1st pair shut down Defenseman before this season started, even though he clearly has the skill set to do so.

I saw all many posts agreeing on the first 5... Then I scrolled down and saw all the Trouba was good nonsense... Why did I have hope in this site (as a whole, I agree they sold trade Trouba for anything possible before the NMC kicks in)

Ask any other Jets fan on here, they'll tell you that Trouba played on the top pair with Morrissey and they were the pair tasked with shutting down the other teams top line.

...........Trades him for the 32nd overall pick........ laugh haha

Honestly, I think NYR are stuck with him. Not because he isn't good but because the cap isn't rising, not many teams can afford an 8m infusion of cap without sending any back and Trouba isn't having the greatest year.

I think a ton of teams are gonna stand pat this offseason and/or decrease salary if possible. The Covid-19 cost will hit many owners wallets hard. Might take a take a season of under spending to recoup some of their losses. Its not like many teams will be all willy-nilly with their salaries next year. Its hit everyone evenly.

Yeah I saw this comment and laughed tbh. Him and Morrissey played on the top pairing for what 2 years at least. He was playing in a shut down role for a while. Morrissey’s play during the 17-18 and 18-19 season had him playing like a borderline elite dman. He is known to boost the play of his partner drastically. Trouba is a good 2nd pairing dman worth probably 5.5m a year. I don’t see him putting up more than 40pts again unless he plays with an elite partner.

as for @AJC13

You need to realize that he did play in a shutdown role in Winnipeg for 2+ years. Him and Morrissey played against the other teams top lines. He wasn’t that great in that role here either. I always had problems with his defensive game, he turned over lots of pucks, made small mistakes. He’s not a 1st pairing guy unless he’s paired with an elite LHD.

It's just like the Rangers to sign him only to regret it and try dumping him for the next shiny toy. You over paid him so you want him gone it's gonna cost ya. Tape Georgiev to him or retain 2 mil and I'll take that trade to detroit. Not our 2nd but Edmonton

Trouba plays a heavy game, but he’s ineffective in a shutdown role and nothing will change unless you give him a borderline elite LHD (like Morrissey) to play with. Being overly physical isn’t a prerequisite to being effective against top lines.

Trouba has a modified NTC his last 2 years (starting in his age 31 season). No one will trade for a 30+ Dman making that much. He’s still young, trade him while he has some value. Fox will be the top pairing d man by next season.

They’ll want to trade him when fox moves up to the top pairing and he’s playing 16-18 min a night because fox and deangelo are much better options on the powerplay.

Just because trouba is physical doesn’t mean he’s effective. Fox doesn’t play a heavy game but he is already better at suppressing shots than trouba. Some isles fans use the physicality argument as to why Johnny boychuk (2nd worst GAR) should play over Dobson when Dobson has the best underlying numbers among isles D.

Totally agree Trouba's GAR was one of the worst in the league right? Def worse than Fox (who should win the Calder imo) and, DeAngelo, who I don't think is that good analytically, but still better than Trouba lol (also yes, Dobson should definitely be playing more)

Subban has the worst GAR, followed by boychuk, Jack Johnson, and trouba. Fox is ranked 10th for GAR and his defensive metrics are better than any of his teammates on defense by a long shot. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be their top pairing D next season and i think dillon would be a solid option to pair with fox considering he’s one of the better even strength defenders in this years UFA class. Rangers are starving for competent LHD.

I know the pens system is different this season and the team played extremely well without Crosby, but Johnson is still really bad lol.

It’s seems like the pens have a progressive mindset for the most part - they have these young no name guys come up from the AHL and tear it up but then they refuse to take one of the worst defenseman in the NHL out of the lineup.

Especially when we have Riikola who's been really good... I think that's a Sully thing tho, I think he hates Riikola... For no good reason as far as I'm aware tho...

It’s frustrating for fans when a coach doesn’t ice the best lineup with the personnel he has available , especially when it’s obvious a player who is scratched is significantly better than the regular.
