Pietrangelo

Created by: Jack_
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 26, 2020
Published: Mar. 26, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Im bored so dont judge me to much but from what I know this isnt against the rules at all.

MLSE, Shanahan or Dubas (doesnt matter who) hires Jayne Cox and they agree to a contract that will pay her a total of 80 million over any period of time. It doesnt matter what she would do with the leafs. the total 80 million along with the 14 million he would get for signing his spc (that would include a full NMC) would total way more then he'd get anywhere on the open market, he'd get to come home and he'd be the main piece on a team that will contend for a cup.
Hes legally entitled to share the 80 million with his wife so not only would he get paid more then he would anywhere else but he would get to come to his hometown team that will be a true cup contender and it would help them a ton financially

That’s cap circumvention at its finest. I saw a tweet today about if an NBA owner married one of their players and signed him to a league minimum contract LMAOOO. Yes, people are losing their mind during quarantine.

Why wouldn't every team do this?

I think the real question here is what the penalty would be for the leafs if this happened. First off, the contract would definitely be rejected by the NHL. There is a 0.00000% chance that the league wouldn’t reject this, and yes, it is VERY much illegal under the CBA rules for cap circumvention. Would his wife’s contract still be in place though? I think if Petro and the leafs did this, the leafs would not get the player, would likely be on the hook for 80 million dollars, and lose at least a first round pick as penalty. Probably multiple picks.

I think it would be extremely hard for the league to prove that the leafs or any team of actually doing this. We already know how passive bettman is when it comes to cap circumvention. If they were to get caught I highly doubt they would prevent Pietro from playing for the leafs and forfeiting draft capital would be forth it. There are so many ways they could get away with it. Theres no way a team would try this but it would actually make the nhl interesting

I think this is kind of the opposite of the truth. If the league thinks its cap circumvention, then it’s cap circumvention. They don’t have to prove anything. Remember Kovalchuk? They just didn’t like that contract so they wouldn’t accept it and docked them a first round pick (later returned, right?) This would be about 500 times worse.

Now, clearly this wouldn’t happen because the leafs front office, and Petro’s agent know all this. It would be a non starter, but let’s say they got really, really drunk one night and tried to submit it to the league. I think people in the leafs front office would lose their job, or at the very least have lengthy suspensions. Of course the contract wouldn’t get accepted by the league. That’s not even up for debate. The question would be what the penalty would be. Definitely a first, but I think it would have to be more than that.

Is this a serious question?

Okay...I'm not going to comment on the legality of such a contract from the league perspective but...let's image in a fantasy world that this contract were acceptable.. There's only maybe 6 teams that can afford and pull this off without blinking.

All the other owners would not be able to pull it off.

You have no idea how much revenue the teams pull in for each playoff game, do you? Probably 20-25 teams would employ this method of cap circumvention if they could get away with it.
