Description
Vancouver have already one players who need to be protect for Seattle expansion draft in Ferland. I guess that Miller, Pettersson, Boeser, Horvat, Gaudette would also be protect so that leave one spot for Toffoli that why they have sacrifice Virtanen. They get rid of Eriksson contract and use that money to land Robin Lehner.

They have space under the cap and they get a young forward in Virtanen. Just like they did with Armia last time.

Last year, Montreal had trouble attracting free agents. I could see a move like this happening if they fail again this season.
GM has to make an effort to improve his team, one way or another.
Pharow liked this.

Ferland doesn't have to be protected in expansion so it's a no for me for this trade. Would Montreal be interested in Joulevi by any chance? If so if you take him straight up without Eriksson what would you give up?

Ferland have a NMC so yes he have to be protected. https://www.capfriendly.com/expansion-draft-faq.

Montreal have already three lefthanded defenseman prospect that are highly ranked So no Montreal would be looking at young winger or prospect winger. The other option would be Adam Gaudette. If Not Montreal could probably take a lesser contract in Sutter or Roussel or Beagle and would ask for Lind or Gadjovich as prospect coming back

Dude Ferland's NMC ends before the expansion draft so no he doesn't have to be protected. What would you say however to a trade of Sutter and Lind for Montreal's own 3rd?

Actually it end after the expansion draft since the draft is made before the draft weekend prospect selection. The rules makes it clear that if a players have a NMC at the moment of the draft must accept to waive is clause. This is from Nhl.com
‘’ All players with no movement clauses at the time of the draft, and who decline to waive those clauses, must be protected and will be counted toward their team's applicable protection limits.’’
Some players where in similar position last time, and it’s probably the main reason he had a NMC clause in is contract to cover expansion draft.

And no if Montreal take Sutter and Lind the pick is still the one own by Washington (85th-90th). If Vancouver become to hungry Montreal will turn themselves to another team who need to free up space under the cap.

Because Lehner is a better goalie and he is younger.
