Sergachev Offersheet

Created by: CaptainFlynnt
Team: 2020-21 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 27, 2020
Published: Mar. 28, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming cap only goes to $83M.

Tampa Bay has ~$6.8M to sign at least 5 players to get the minimum 20 man roster. Assuming they are somehow able to fill the other 4 roster spots with $700k cap hits that only leaves ~$4M to resign Sergachev.

Tampa would only need to offer ~$4.6M to match MTL's offer after you factor in taxes, however it is possible Sergachev and his agent would be willing to sign this deal to try and force Tampa Bay into matching it, in which case Sergachev will have boosted his contract with TB by at least $2M.

If TB were unable to match the offersheet, Sergachev still gets paid likely more than TB would pay him, and he will get the opportunity to play 1st pairing minutes and step out of Hedman's shadow in Tampa Bay, setting him up for a big pay day after this two year deal expires.

This is a win win for MTL. They either get Sergachev or they screw over a division rivals plan (TB would have to move out salary somehow to match).

If the offersheet is successful, I would likely flip Mete afterwards (assuming they are able to sign scandella) since they will need to make room for Sergachev and Romanov.

Why would Sergachev sign a 2 year offer sheet? He's not wasting his time on a 2 year offer sheet. And pretty sure offer sheets are generally based on 5 year deals at the very least. Unless if the season is saved and that's doubtful. The cap remains the same or goes down slightly.

Tampa matches easily, because 1 Sergachev isn’t signing that ridiculous of low offer sheet, and Tampa won’t have a huge problem generating an additional 5-10M in cap space if they absolutely have to.

For Sergachev to be acquired through offer sheet you're looking at a 7x7 contract minimum.

@Subbanator7667 @Xqb15 @DiehardRedWingsFan58 @Leafsfan34

I would expect TB to match it, but like I said they would have to move salary to do so.

If you were to ask most Tampa fans right now, they think they will get Sergachev on a 2 - 3 year bridge deal worth ~$4.5M.

@DiehardRedWingsFan58 why would he sign a 2 year offer sheet? Because $6.341M is pretty good for 2 year bridge deal, he will get a raise after that, and it most certainly beats what Tampa can offer him. Please come up with a 5 year offersheet value and a team that would be willing to do so we can actually discuss it.

For what it's worth, only 4 out of 9 signed offersheets since the lockout have been 5 years or more, so your statement doesn't hold any truth.

Edit:
The real reason Sergachev signs this offersheet is because he wants TB to match it. They just have to be willing to risk going to MTL if it doesnt work out that way.

Very similar to the Aho offersheet, player gets the contract he wants no matter what, whether it is with TB or MTL is up to TB management.
