UFA Winger 1 Year Deal

Created by: UpsideDownQue
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2020
Published: Mar. 29, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Would any of these UFAs be willing to take a 1 year deal to compete for a cup? AAV could be inflated to entice them to sign a 1 year deal (this would depend on the cap upper limit, with an 84M cap they could afford up to an 8.75M deal). It would be risky for them since they lose long term job security, but they could also hit the jackpot and set new career highs playing on a stacked team which could result in a bigger contract the year after.

    the answer is no

Espeically Namestnikov,. Which I'm wondering what a fair price on him would be.
I'm guessing in the 3 to 3.5 range. Seems to be what teen to 20 goal scorers go for.

yeah thats what Im asking. Normally they wouldnt but if we jack the AAV up to something ridiculous (max 8.75M with an 84M cap) would they reconsider?

Kovalchuk might not have a choice he is 35 and has no problem walking away half way through a deal.

no they won't. A lot of those guys are already on the wrong side of 30 and will have a hard enough time getting teams to give them term.

Kovalchuck and Marleau probably would? As both will be getting close to retirement, But noway the rest do.

Some would, some would not. The cap is most likely staying flat due to COVID, a CBO is a nice fantasy and most likely NOT going to happen, and, lastly, there is the XDraft at the end of the year. I see a lot of 1-2 year deals for any one that can not going to be protected in XD, because the odds of a VGK repeat is slim to none. No one that is still wanting a shot at Stanley is going to want to get stuck in Seattle for the end of their careers. Dads and Hoff will most likely sign long term with a contender for a top 6 role, ie -protected. So no on those two. Names and Kova... those two could find protection and sign long term on a rebuild or bubble team, but not get a good shot at the cup for a while. On the Avs, a legit contender, they will compete for the last slots with JT, Josty, Nuke, and Dons. No guarantees here. As for 8 mill + for those two, you are out your mind. Kova - I don't want and don't think he would fit here, not enough ice time with the personnel we have for him to be effective. Names - his #s have not been consistent nor high enough to consider that much. More like a Bura "prove it/see if you fit" type contract at 3mill for 1yr.

I dont think any of them would take a 1 year deal. Avs dont have to get cute with the cap. They have the space to add a UFA winger int he 6.5m range after they keep all their guys and wouldnt impact their ability to extend Landy Makar and MacKinnon

not a bad target as a fall back. I dont think the market for him would be hot for him so if they strike out on a few guys that could be a target.
However how lucky can a team get with these projects. they got Burakovsky to break out, Nichushkin to pan out in a reclaim project....cant work every single time

Haula would be the guy I think they should target in UFA. They have some interesting moves to make in regards to one of Zadorov or Graves and one of Jost or Kamanev...once that all plays out, that will show what they really need in terms of a Middle 6 winger

Dark house 1 year cup chaser could be Thornton. Apparently he was disappointed he didnt get moved at the deadline for a shot at the cup.
maybe he hits the open market this offseason

I don't know why people keep thinking a CBO won't happen. There are enough teams out there willing to vote yes on that.

Teams yeah maybe... NHLPA don't see them signing off on that. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure that they might get a say in that.

Haula is a good shout, he'd be a good fit. That said, he'll probably want a little raise, some term (too much), and probably wants to play top 6 minutes,... none of which are likely with Colorado.

As romantic as the idea is of doing another "Bourque" moment, Thornton is the antithesis of the type of style the Avs play. Avs are a fast transition team, whereas Thornton lacks the speed and plays more on the cycle. There's no obvious role for him either given that we have Bellemare and Compher at C in the bottom 6.
