I like this idea in it's basis, but I don't think it relieves enough cap for STL to budge.

Looks like STL bailing yall out to me. No thanks, I'd rather we either open up cap or keep Bozak if that's the offer.

Bailing Oilers out, they both have 1 year left and Oilers could just buy out Russell and than contract is gone. The trade is actually pretty even. But so be it

Russell is a defense man, so totally different player and they both really have terrible contracts. Russell is 2 million to high and Bozak is 3 million to high

I am not sure that this is the right way to look at it. They play different positions and fulfill different roles.

They play different positions but you can still compare their impacts. I don't think Russell is above replacement level so I wouldn't trade for him - we'd be better off moving Bozak for nothing and using the cap space on a good player.

Is this even possible? Not very many GM's are willing to take a mediocre player who is making $5M without sending some cap back in return. I mean, why wouldn't the GM with $5M burning a hole in his pocket just go out and sign that "good player" you speak of?

Fine, give cap back but ffs not Kris Russell lol that's all I'm trying to say. It's a swap of 1 yr of overpaid players, but I don't want the worse one for slightly less money. I'd look at the Soderberg trade between COL and ARI as the comp. The Avs opened up like 3m.

It's ideal, its just not that easy to work out. If you look at all the AGMs on this site, virtually all of them are trading unwanted players with cap for picks. In a flat (or declining) cap situation, that's just not going to happen very often. You have to look at trades that make your situation better, since trades that make your situation perfect just aren't out there.

Not arguing with anyone, but why are we saying that Tyler Bozak is "better" than Kris Russell in the first place??? Based on what? The fact that Tyler Bozak scores more goals and wins more faceoffs? Is that surprising?

Look at Edmonton's PK %. Now look at St. Louis's PK%. Kris Russell is a big part of that. His career plus/minus is great, especially considering what a bad defensive team Edmonton has been the past few years. Edmonton have great LHD in Klefbom and Nurse, so $4m is a little much to pay for Russell is the only reason Oilers should trade him.

Same with Bozak. He is a fantastic player, but he is probably the highest paid 3C in the league.

The question is whether each team's money would be better spent.
