Blues and Hurricanes

Created by: BeterChiarelli
Team: 2020-21 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 29, 2020
Published: Mar. 30, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
One compliance buyout (Neal) and an $80M cap considered.

Built around the idea of other teams needing cap space: St. Louis and Carolina came to mind and I wonder if the pieces I'm acquiring can play bigger roles than they did on their respective teams. Could Nino be a steal for the Oilers? Could Allen give Edmonton the best 1-2 punch it's had in net since before the turn of the millennium?

Tight cap would require Edmonton running without a spare forward: given that McDavid and Draisaitl are thoroughbreds, I don't find this to be a huge issue. Double-shifting for the odd bit of time won't hurt them. Went for a lefty spare on the blueline: if Green is showing signs of wear or is indeed slowing down, the call goes to Bouchard to step in and assume his role on the team. He'd likely force Larsson into the #3LD position and would pair phenomenally well with either Klefbom or Nurse.

Benson and Bouchard to start in the AHL. Benson likely doesn't make his way onto this roster unless Nygard quits being an NHL player overnight. I figure it's likely he's used at the 2021 deadline to add even more firepower up front.

Draft:
#23. (C) Jan Mysak (Hamilton, OHL)
#85. (RW) Brandon Coe (North Bay, OHL)
#115 (via CAR). (RW) Oskar Magnusson (Malmo, SuperElit)
#147. (G) Calle Clang (Rogle, SuperElit)
#178. (RW) Ivan Didkovsky (Moskova, MHL)
#209. (LW) Danny Weight (Penticton, BCHL)

Draft done using ratio of where players are ranked as per central scouting, with a bit of cross-referencing done against the Athletic, EPRinkside, The Draft Analyst, and Future Considerations.

If there really is compliance buyouts, the Blues will likely be able to keep one of Bozak/Allen

That deal is not worth it to the Blues. Only about 4m cap relief (and they'll need to spend some of that on a new back-up) to take three players we don't want. No thanks.

Yeah it's really not a bad deal for the Blues, we just are trying to shed salary with Bozak and Allen and the best way to do that would be sending them in different deals. I think EDM can be a good fit for Bozak though, seems like a great fit as the 3C to take a good portion the defensive zone draws, win faceoffs, and chip in ~40pts to McD and Drai.
