I can't see that happening to Lundy unless he okays it

You buy out Staal, and you pay someone a 2nd to buyout Smith

I hear ya, but what do we do with Lundqvist? And what does he do? He’s not a starter in this league anymore and nobody wants to pay his cap hit. At least this option cleanly gets his $8.5m cap hit off the books. Keeping him on the books and dumping Staal is a $2.8m difference and we still have 3 goalies. Staal is terrible, but there’s nobody in the system currently ready to play in the NHL at a playoff level either.

Yeah I get ya. Thats why I said you also pay the 2nd to get someone who doesn't have someone to buyout to buy out Smith. In regards to the three goalie thing.... Yeah I have nothing. I just think that Lundy gets to dictate how this goes. He's been the backbone of this team for about 15 years I want to say (didn't literally check). Some of those teams were pretty damn good, some were borderline, but outside of the last two years, they were always at least competitive because of the King.

He may accept a compliance buyout as above, so he can go chase a cup as a 1B veteran behind a young guy (think Samsonov in Washington, or maybe Rittich in Calgary), but I think its his ball. Loyalty generally doesn't exist in sports, but if anyone has earned it...I think its him.
