NJDs Barabanov and Zub

Created by: FireShero
Team: 2020-21 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 22, 2020
Published: Mar. 30, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Gusev, Barabanov, and Zub all played together for 3 year at SKA Saint Petersburg; hopefully with how well Gusev did in his first year with the Devils he can convice them to join. Also the Devils have a spot open in the top 6/ top 9 for a winger, a spot for a RHD-man that may grow depending on if PK regresses further, and the cap space.

Thought Butcher might pair well with Petry or on the 3rd pair with Kulak/ Fluery (not too sure about MTL defense though). Took on Alnzer for better picks/ so MTL wouldn't have 5 guys for left-handed D-men.

Saw TBL had Shattenkirk, Ruuta, Scheen, Bogosian, and Cernak all on expiring deals, thought TBL could use a cheap bottom pairing right handed defender. Plus Sosunov is Russian so just added more Russian prospects to the system.

Kept Schneider, because for some reason I still think he might bounce back, also I doubt the Devils view themselves as Stanley Cup contenders so if he plays poorly he can buried and bought out next summer. Signed Kinkaid as a backup- backup plan and he has already been in the system already.

Ryan/ Hayden are just depth signings so that if someone is injured for 1-3 games people from Binghamton aren't called up just to sit in the press box.

Any thoughts?? Fair Value???

Barabanov at 4M per? You nuts? He is likely signing ELC for one year with some team (Toronto and ARI are frontrunners, Zub is also 99% locked in to join Ottawa)

coyotes and the leafs have been reported to be 2 of the 3 favorites of acquiring him. Also that contract is an big no no. While I like we are looking for cheap alternatives. I would rather dubas try to sign a KHL defenseman. Can come cheap, could be a good pairing for rielly or sandin, and can bring skills not seen before.

Thought he was 25, so he didn't need to sign an ELC like Gusev did last year? Also the $4 million is so high because, like you said, the Devils are not frontrunners. So I thought the only way to get him here is to overpay. I also saw the reports saying Zub is going to Ottawa but the idea was that he follow Gusev and Barabanov to the Devils.

$4 million is steep but the Devils aren't a big market team, have been a bottom 10 for most of the past, and seemingly aren't in Barabanov's top choices. It is too much for him but it would only be for 2 years and the Devils aren't likely to contenders next year so they are going to have cap space. It is not my money but I feel like gambling on 25 isn't a terrible idea.

Also Zub sounds exactly what you are looking for best +/- in the KHL, 24 so can only sign ELC, and is right handed.

I would hope this team could match last years' team, but instead of losing assests like last year for Gusev/ Subban, the Devils would essentialy be getting 2 players for cash rather than picks/ players.

What do you have Butcher's value at? My thought was taking on Alzner gets a 2nd and Butcher is worth about 2nd. Plus if Smith does well in camp Butcher might expendable.
