My Ideal Roster for Next Season

Created by: Hockyluv21
Team: 2020-21 Carolina Hurricanes
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 30, 2020
Published: Mar. 31, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Hamilton agrees to an 8 year, $8.6M AAV extension with the Hurricanes. All of my sign-and-trades with Hamilton were worst-case, plan-B type scenarios. Vatanen agrees to a 1 year extension with Carolina so that he can test the market when the conditions are better post-COVID-19.

"All of my sign-and-trades with Hamilton were worst-case, plan-B type scenarios."

So fleecing Winnipeg and getting Connor + Pionk + Samberg was just a plan B ?

Absolutely, because that was no fleece at all. You need to re-evaluate your concept about trade value. Our team is better with Hamilton than with Connor and Pionk, period, and so would your team if they had Hamilton instead of Connor and Pionk. Maybe Samberg becomes the defenseman that people think that he will be in a couple of years, but again, that's a pretty significant downgrade risk for a team that's built to win right now. Ideally, we want our man Dougie extended and be a Cane for life.

Let me maybe explain it in another way: Hamilton is, analytically-speaking, as valuable as Aho is from a game score value-added perspective. If we offered Aho, Fleury, and Dzingel in a package to you for Connor, Pionk, and Samberg, the best response for Winnipeg would be to sign that paper and run laughing like bandits. The only reason why Hamilton would be remotely available is that there is a not-insignificant possibility that Hamilton's contract demands, if over $10M, could negatively impact the depth of our particular team when Svech and Necas are up for extensions.

The matter is that the game sample is too small to value him that much right now. Accordingly to this year, he is highly valuable, i admit it. If he translates his play this season to the next and the one after, then we talk. Shayne Gostisbehere was also considered nearly untouchable when he had his insane season and look what happened after. Consistency is the key to a player's value. But right now, Hamilton at 11m$ is not worth a 23 yo 40 goal, 80 points scorer PLUS a top 4 defenceman PLUS a A- prospect.

If you look at Hamilton's 3-year stats, everything other than GF seems relatively repeatable... And you can say the same thing about Pionk, just bc he was top 4 calibre this year doesn't mean he's a top 4 guy, he had never been before (plus Connor is overrated, but that's not the point of this post lol)

You could probably get a better return for mrazek. A fifth round pick and a okay goalie prospect for a decent starter? thats crazy
